My partner and I were taking a long, leisurely walk yesterday through an historical section of town, admiring some of the beautiful 19th century architecture and lovely gardens of some of the old manor homes. Just before we turned to head home, we had stopped to admire one particular house for its graceful architectural elements (they don't make houses like that anymore) when we suddenly espied in its driveway the biggest Hummer I'd ever seen. Huge and black with dark-tinted windows and personalized plates which simply said "GAS HOG". The juxtaposition of such beauty with this ugly hulk and display of "fuck you" arrogance really ticked me off. I've been unable to get that out of my mind all day.

There's a thread right now on those stupid-ass ball hitch covers but for pure obscenity this one beats them by a country mile. Good thing the owners weren't outside and my more level-headed partner was with me or I'm sure I'd have gotten into trouble with my big mouth.

That's all I can figure. What an "up yours" to anyone sick of wars for oil, of blood spilled to fill up his tank, to anyone concerned about global warming or turned off by conspicuous consumption. Yeah, the guy should be proud. But like most rich folks, he's probably laughing his ass off that he's got his and everyone else on the planet can go to hell. I can't imagine he doesn't already know he looks like an asshole; he's just got enough money not to give a shit.
