Cops: Couple ordered hit on grandkids (to protect their baby-raping son)

Wanted to stop testimony at son's rape trial, police say

TAVARES, Florida (AP) -- A couple tried to hire a hit man to kill their three grandchildren and daughter-in-law to stop them from testifying against their son in his rape trial, authorities said.

The couple, ages 60 and 59, were charged with four counts each of criminal conspiracy to commit murder. They were being held without bond.

Police said the pair initially offered $100 to an undercover sheriff's deputy to kill their son's wife, their 10-year-old granddaughter, two step-grandchildren, ages 14 and 16, and the family dog.

More money was promised after the killings, said Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Christie Mysinger.

The couple's 31-year-old son has been jailed since November on 22 charges of sexual battery on a child, lewd and lascivious molestation and showing obscene material to a minor, court records show.

4. That is one
of the sickest things I've ever read. Wonder just what "family fun" meant when the son was a kid. Granma and pa are covering some of their skeletons I'd be willing to bet.

I lived in Gainesville for a while and it was the only explanation that made sense.

12. 25-life = nothing to lose
While it's a terribly sick case, the California Dems fought Jessica's Law here because they thought the 25-life mandatory might be more dangerous to the children. These freaks are an example of how that might be true sometimes.

There's no defending the son or the parents, but this is scary. And it's scarier still to think it might not matter if the son is guilty or not (yeah, I know, he probably is and we usually assume he would be).

Is it possible even an innocent man would go to that extreme if facing a mandatory 25-life? We don't want to think that, but IS IT POSSIBLE?

It makes me literally shudder to think someone like John Couey, who killed Jessica Lunsford, killed her to cover the crime rather than out of some monstrous sadism. Couey will get death, and if anyone deserves it he does, but I don't think these new laws will always help prevent another murder like Jessica's. They might even encourage more murders like that sometimes. I don't see how someone could do that, but I don't see how a little girl could be sexually attractive, either. So even though it can't make sense, IS IT POSSIBLE?

Flame away, but I shed tears for Jessica too and think we should damn well know what the hell we are doing when a child's life is at stake. And, frankly, I don't trust men like Bill O'Reilly when it comes to caring about children. He too often seems interested in punishment rather than children's welfare and prevention. When it's time for punishment, it's TOO LATE. There is already a victim.

Clicking Post Message is making me feel like a rabbit standing on the tracks. Here comes the locomotive. So be it.

22. 2 more inmates in Lake solicited murder, cops say
2 more inmates in Lake solicited murder, cops say

Erin Cox | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted June 3, 2006

TAVARES -- Two Lake County Jail inmates were charged this week in unrelated murder-for-hire plots, accused of conspiring to kill children scheduled to testify against them in abuse cases.

Daniel A. King, 25, offered $5,000 for someone to kidnap and kill a 5-year-old girl who said he forced her to perform oral sex, deputy sheriffs said. He was charged with one count of solicitation to commit murder and one count of solicitation to commit kidnapping.

Deputy sheriffs said Jeffrey C. Roden, 36, wrote a letter to his father requesting $1,000 for a hitman to kill his girlfriend and her 4-year-old son before he came to trial on charges of using a belt to beat the boy. He was charged with two counts of solicitation to commit murder and remains in jail without bail.

The two men were charged Thursday night, two days after a sting operation exposed a third inmate's elaborate plan to have his parents pay hitmen $400 to kill his wife, his two teenage stepchildren, his daughter and the family dog, again to prevent testimony on charges he abused the children. The parents were jailed after the 59-year-old mother was videotaped offering undercover deputy sheriffs a $100 down payment to kill "all" of her son's family.

21. Reasonable view, of course...
And only meant that trying to debate the law is tantamount to treason, as if even giving it some thought as the media sweeps it across the country is wrong. Some of the current posts are more like it. Simpleminded and based on soundbites - media fed minds ignoring the danger. Not everyone will be as dumb as this family. Rather than using that luck to take a minute and think, more soundbites and slogans.

14. Well, the grandparents' attitude explains how their son grew up
so warped.

I was once involved in interpreting for one of the victims in a case in Portland where parents enabled their son's sadism. My head reeled thinking about the family dynamics in that household.

16. I admit to being amazed by the paltry sum
$100 bucks for four murders with more coming later. Assuming a 10% deposit that would be 1000.
