who, like me, had always had a liberal/progressive outlook. When the subject of the election came up, it became clear her husband had had an impact on her--given his own disillusionment with working it under the Clinton administration. When I said without blinking that I'd never vote for Bush* (with considerable surprise at her even asking), she asked me my reasons. Reflexively, I said Supreme Court...the courts. At the suggestion that I was a "single issue voter," I pretty much had to restrain myself to avoid shouting that all other issues are secondary because they have the potential to be corrected. Packing the courts with RW extremists would have multi-generations of impact.
This colleague is one of the smartest women I've ever met. I know my point hit home. I pulled back from contact with her after finding that she and her husband both became highly placed consultants with the Bush* administration, for at least some time. I feel certain they were quickly disillusioned and likely both left, but I can't be sure. I've often wonder if she thinks back to that discussion that night. I was no soothsayer--just had my eyes wide open, that's all. Sadly I've been proven to be right and our children will suffer throughout their lives, right along with us, as a result.
