'How Homophobic Are You?" Quiz

Moderate Low
You scored 40% Homophobic!
Moderately nonhomophobic. That's good, and still below average. Good you. The average would be 53.

Wow, pretty good for a straight guy! :D

EDIT: I should mention some of my responses were "No opinion," because the questions were worded somewhat awkwardly -- that's probably why my rating wasn't less then 20%.

9. No argument there;
I saw where they could have added qualifying questions along with the redundancy (of course, the MMPI and other professional tests also have redundancy); there is an amateur quality to the test.

13. OhioBlues!
The test asked if I'd feel uncomfortable if a person of the same sex made a pass at me.

The test didn't even ask if I was gay.

I said "yes".

What the test did not even bother to determine was if it's out of homophobia... or being nervous and scared around people in social situations. For me it's the latter; my natural defenses spring up. They've been a survival mechanism but they've also been a detriment.

I got 10%, but I did not answer "comfortable" to that question. I mean, I've known my best friend since 1985. If I found out she was gay after all these years, then I'd be pretty upset. I mean, I should have either figured it out for myself, or she should/would have told me!

I don't know where that 4% came in - I'd wager there's built-in homophobia in the test since the test writer him/herself said "everyone has a bit of homophobia in them" with which I disagree wholeheartedly.

But hey, I scored okay anyway.

Just kidding.

But those questions were really tricky, kind of like that Minnesota mind-fuck test they give you at dept. stores when you apply. You really had to pay attention to the questions and stuff, I had to change my answers after re-reading because I kept getting uncomfortable and comfortable confused.

18. I don't think I was surprised... 12% Very NonHomophobic
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 08:07 AM by hlthe2b
Nearly every question about living near, working with, being friends with, going to a gay party or bar as a heterosexual, having someone make an advance, etc., etc., I've already experienced sometime in my life. I think I've already worked out most of any possible conflicts on this one:

12% Very NonHomophobic. pretty ok, for a straight female of my age group.

But... not totally
The only question I had to honestly say I had some qualms was the one where they asked if you would be uncomfortable if I learned that my spouse or partner was attracted to members of his or her sex. In all honesty, I had to say yes. That's reflexive and I don't know how I'd feel if given time to think it through....

I think the discussions the past few days about transgender have been revealing though. I'm pretty accepting there too, but, I don't know that I wouldn't score evidence of a few more hangups...

Interesting, while obviously not scientific...

Too much fear, and that leads to prejudice if that's not there already.

Prejudice leads to fear too. :(

Just because one is attracted to both doesn't mean one will automatically cheat. Life isn't a mirror of Jerry Springer, fortunately. :7

34. I agree, HypnoToad...
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 08:12 AM by hlthe2b
I can intellectualize that without problem... Attraction does not equate to action.

I just have to admit a kneejerk reaction, if it came to my own spouse and hopefully only because I've never really thought enough about it to reconcile my feelings on it. On the other hand, I might be sensitive to my spouse being attracted to another female too, depending on the circumstances (and the presence of the "green eyed monster!"). So, I am not sure how much might just be old fashioned jealousy and insecurity, and how much would really reflect any degree of discomfort with respect to homosexuality. Never really thought nor experienced it, so I really don't know...

I don't think we are born predjudiced against any group or person. But, as we grow up, I think there is a human tendency to be suspect against those who are different from us. We can work through that over time if we are willing to do so, but the process is facilitated by direct experience, I think.

26. Ugh, at 48% I scored higher than 99% of my age and gender.
That is nothing compared to my IAT scores, which are actually accurate.

BEFORE we start jumping to conclusions, no, I am very pro every right you can think of in the subject; (Well, given that I see no distinction between anyone pretty much - we are after all all human, it would be very strange of me indeed not to), but spending so long in an environment that had specific nasty reactions towards that kind of stuff, it was put on my amygdala that gay = danger. (which means I feel uncomfortable in immediate situations, but if I found out the local pastor was gay I would not care)

It is a subconscious part of the brain, and I do not let it control my political ideas.
Just one of the many things I must fight from my poorly wired subconscious. meh.

I'd personally not givashit if my (non-existent) kid's teacher were gay. It'd take something more relevant to cause me 'comfort' - like maybe she was straight, gorgeous, and hot for MY bod. (After all, Latourneau wasn't gay.)

61. Yeah ... the difference between 'comfortable' and 'no-opinion' ...
... seems (strangely) to result in the "awarding" of points. Maybe I should feel 'comfortable' if my daughter's/son's male/female teacher is gay so they don't get LaTourneau'd? Dunno. Hell ... my "comfort" would have to do with their teaching skills, not their sexual orientation.

54. It seems strange to me so many questions are hypothetical.
The only thing outside my experience so far is if my kids are homosexual or not. If they are, they are not telling yet, but they wouldn't be the first in the family, not by a long shot.

Our everyday family life is affirmative of homosexuality. It's just something that is.

I work with GLBT people, I've visited gay and lesbian bars. If a guy starts flirting with me I take that as a compliment. Our circle of family and friends includes married gay and lesbian couples.

I think it has a lot to do with how one is raised. My background is a little bit Hollywood and San Francisco, so homosexuality was simply part of the neighborhood.

55. Some of these questions are weird.
It's not that I really care about who makes a pass at me, but that I just don't like most people in general. And yes, I would be uncomforable if my boss were a homosexual, because then it'd mean I'd have a boss. Being a homosexual is ancillary.

You scored 12% Homophobic!

You scored higher than 20% on Homophobic

I suppose I "failed" to answer 'comfortable' on some questions where it's totally irrelevant to me whether a teacher or boss or coworker is homosexual or not. Since it's irrelevant, I have no reason to feel "comforted" or "discomforted" ... unless, of course, I'm more comfortable with non-discriminatory organizations, but that's far more than merely a single specific individual whose sezual orientation says very little about the organization.

Oh well. Since I've been in many of the situations described, I don't really have to imagine - just recall.

No wonder the other girls in my dorm thought I was weird in college, what with their fear of lesbians in the women's dorm. :eyes:

My mama raised me right--other people's sexuality doesn't mean anything to me personally, and I really don't care. The only reason I got that high was when they asked about my hubby--it would make me uncomfortable if he were highly attracted to anyone else, no matter who it is.

Of course, I've worked with lots of gays and have had 2 gay bosses (one of them was a former drag queen performer).

I don't give a toss who sleeps with whom as long as you leave kids and animals out of it. Beyond that, it's none of my business.

Edited for clarity.

80. I came up 28% and it was mainly due to being uncomfy with
the idea of hubby being attracted to other men. (I'm already insecure enough without massively expanding the number of other people he could be attracted to. *l*)
