Weltschmerz - or, as DUers call it, EVERY SINGLE DAY UNTIL 2009
Such a shame that the poor girl blew the word during the Scripps Spelling Bee tonight - but at least all of us DUers just enriched our word power a little bit more. Weltschmerz describes a lot of what I see here on a day-by-day basis.

2. I didn't see the spelling bee....
..but I remember that word from a psychology class in college. Weltschmerz= world sorrow

And that is EXACTLY how I feel when I think about America's place in the world.

(from the German: Welt=world, Schmerz=pain, pronounced "velt-smerts")

1.) mental depression or apathy caused by comparison of the actual state of the world with an ideal state.

 Welcome to BushWorld

3. Or, as my wife calls it, "sentimental pessimism"
The sort of feeling where you want to down a glass of absinthe, slam the glass on the table, and declare to nobody in particular, "My God, we've got to get a Democrat in the White House."

4. Well, you know, that seems to be the current zeitgeist.
We alternate between bouts of weltschmerz and schadenfreude.
