How many of us have something else we wanted to do with that $30,000 Bush stole from us?

I did.

I say that we charge him with 350,000,000 counts of Grand Theft after we impeach his worthless ass.

2. To be fair...

only about 42 percent of this is *'s fault. Most of the rest is leftovers from previous republican
mis-administrations, notably daddy * and his mentor, "The great mis-communicator".

This from the party of fiscal responsibility!!!

5. At this point it's more like 25%
By the end of his 2nd term it'll probably be sitting around 42%.

6. nope
They are asking for the debt ceiling to be raised to 8.5 Trillion. At the end of CLinton's second term, when we actually reduced the debt (before the cry of "return SURPLUS to taxpayers - cut taxes" was raised), the debt was a little above 5 trillion. That's 2.8 trillion of new debt out of 8.1 trillion of current total debt.

So, OK, it's only 33 percent.

But as a percent of GDP... look at the following:

7. But the new debt ceiling hasn't been realized.
If you take the numbers from this site:

http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/opd/opdhisto4.htm

the amount of debt added between 9/30/00 and 9/30/05 constitutes about 28% of the total debt. Bush of course wasn't responsible for the first months of this and it excludes the last few months, but it's a good rough gauge.

I agree that debt/GDP is the best way of measuring the true burden of debt on an economy. It's bad right now, but it's been worse. The damage Bush has done can be undone by 8 years of a Democratic presidency.

3. Where Do I Send The Check?
Because I'd do it, you know. If I could simply write a check and pay it, what my wife and I owe, and then we could be free of taxes for the rest of our lives, well hell, I'd write the check today.

9. I'm with you.
Will sending a check for $30,000 get me off the hook?

10. No, that wouldn't free you from future taxes or benefits. It would

just pay for what you already owe.

If you want to live in the U.S. in the future, or receive its benefits, you'll need to pay taxes.

4. That's it?
More like 60,000 I would think.

IIRC it was 20 something when Clinton was in office.

8. I need it to pay off student loans!
Really soon.

I do think we should get it back. Rescind the tax cuts for corporations and the rich. We could all pay off some Visa cards or something.
