This handy map will give you the stats. Just click on the desired state to see that state's ranking for GLBT rights, availability of contraception and abortion services, statistics on poverty and numbers of uninsured, and much more.

1. Dead last!

South Dakota ranks last.

Last in teacher pay.
Last in reproductive rights.
Last in gay rights.

And our response to being last in gay/women's rights:

A conservative Republican legislator from South Dakota, Sen. Lee Schoenbeck, described the results as "a badge of honor."

"I'd have been disappointed if we'd finished any higher than last," he said.

Simply put, if you are not a rich, white male in South Dakota, you shouldn't have any rights. That's what we're dealing with here folks.

4. Thank goodness someone beat us!
(You know what I mean.)

I live in MO. Right now we're ranked 42. I truthfully expected it to be even worse-more like 48.

5. I was surprised to see Kansas ranked at #27.
Kansas received 100 penalty points on the following filters:
Abortion method bans (also known as ‘partial-birth’ abortion bans)
Mandatory counseling before abortion
Mandatory waiting period before abortion
Mandatory parental involvement in minors’ abortions
Abortion coverage under the Medicaid program
Contraceptive equity in private insurance
Confidential family planning services for minors
Emergency contraception (EC) in the emergency room
Emergency contraception (EC) pharmacy access
Anti-discrimination laws for LGBT Community
DOMA (Defense of Marriage Acts) and similar constitutional amendments
Same-sex marriage laws
State constitutional guarantee of equal rights for men and women (ERA)
“Conscience” or refusal clauses

Kansas received 50 penalty points on the following filters:
Lack of protection or restriction: Second-parent/Step-parent adoption by same-sex partners
Enjoined: Legal status of midwifery

If they had taken our Attorney General's shenanigans into account, we probably would have gotten a worse rating.
