The reason the GOP is attacking Al Gore.
Some on DU might think Al Gore is being attacked because Republicans view his film as a threat to their economic well being or they view him as a viable presidential candidate in '08.

It's neither of the reasons listed above.

Although I haven't seen his movie, I heard it explains complex issues in a concise matter that average people can understand.

Any time the political right is confronted with a political opponent who can influence public opinion and give the American People a real debate they resort to character assassination against that person.

They attacked Al Gore--->Michael Moore------>David Brock---->Steve Kangas------>Bill Clinton for the same exact reasons and so it continues.

1. It worked so well with Moore and the Dixie Chicks
I think a vicious, mindless attack by right wing scumbags is almost a guarantee of quality.

3. It worked very well with the Dixie Chicks.

So well in fact that even with Bush's approval rating now at 30%, the media is still promoting the Dixie Chicks as musicians with "radical views" of the president. :wtf:

2. I think Gore is in a GREAT position.....
He doesn't have to worry about getting re-elected.
He DID NOT VOTE FOR THIS DAMN WAR.

These two factors free Gore to speak the truth, and he is, recently calling Bush a "renegad rightwing extremist"

4. With so many people with video cameras these days,
they can't take the 1930s Germany actions used against "intellectual" opposition . . .

6. I saw the report KO's sub did on this "Swiftboating" of Al Gore
It was nice to see them use the phrase "Swiftboating" in the report. It shows a pattern of deliberate character assassination on the part of angry RW extremists. At some point all of these vicious attacks will backfire on them when everyone finally realizes that RWers are compulsive hateful liars.

13. I think that time is upon us.
"At some point all of these vicious attacks will backfire on them when everyone finally realizes that RWers are compulsive hateful liars." Am I being too hopeful?

14. It is getting better in some circles
There is obviously a backlash to the backlash going on at this time. They will eventually realize they are wrong and do the right thing for the country - or they will dig their heels in and we will have a civil war. It's up the the perpetrators to step back from the edge before it is too late.

11. They made it clear that they didn't just want their voices heard
in the media, they wanted their voice to be the only voice. The Republicans do not want to be just the majority party, they want to be the only party. They have said publicly that they want America to be ruled by one party, the republicans.

BTW, if anyone has that article (s) or video with the quotes I alluded to, please post it.

12. They have a vested interest in keeping environmentalists out of office
No big business people want Gore to be handing down higher CAFE standards or reinstating the polluter pay laws that Bush got rid of.

It's even better if they can discredit his views on environmentalism and get the majority of the population to think it's extreme.
