And what is it with Bush and bald men, anyway?

2. Well it looks like Bush himself is definitely thinning
Perhaps he wants some moral support for this difficult time in his life when his hair is falling out.

14. I Really Don't Care
I suspect he'll be a vast improvement on Snow. He doesn't sound like a shrinking violet or like someone willing to connive in the financial destruction of the country.

17. Since he "serves at the pleasure of the president" --
I doubt he'll do anything not dictated by whoever is pulling the Treasury strings. Otherwise, according to the way the Bush administration does business, he's outta there. I can't share your confidence that he will be any improvement.

18. Think of the Difference between O'Neill and Snow
That will be the difference here. Snow was a pathetic nonentity. O'Neill had convictions and a conscience. No, he doesn't have he final authority. But there is a huge difference between an administration full of yes men and one full of professionals willing to put forth their views.

19. As the saying goes, I won't spend it 'til I got it. :)
There are almost no surprises from this administration that end up impacting the public interest for the better, it would be stunning should Paulson turn out to be one of them.

25. Paulsen Won't be Able to Balance the Budget ot Anything
but Bush is not a micromanager. He probably has no idea what the hell goes on at Treasury and cares less.

For a whole host of issues that roll beneath the Karl Rove level, it's much better to have a competent person there. Even with all the limitations.

31. Competence doesn't count in this bunch nearly as much as loyalty
As for Bush, we all know Cheney is the man behind the curtain. If competent government lawyers are drafting legislation with an eye towards whether it will pass muster with Cheney or not (as reported), how much chance does Paulson stand to even have his skills see the light of day.

34. That is True, But I Doubt Paulson Will be a Pushover
Nothing about him sounds like a Bushbot. He is, after all, a "master of the universe" on his own terms.

In fact, one of the reasons I'm so pleased with this nomination is that Bush DOES value loyalty over competence. He could easily have given the job to a tool like Larry Lindsey, who would have been a complete disaster. Paulson is more in the mold of Rubin, Summers, or O'Neill.

The other thing it suggests is that Bush is losing power on the economic side of the house. His foreign policy is still staffed with incompetents and loyalists, but this is his second top economic post (after Bernanke) he's given to a widely respected professional. I think he's on a short leash with the business and financial communities (who gave him a lot of his power) over the defecit, the exchange rate, and inflation.

36. He may not be a Bushbot, but he is a loyal Bush "pioneer."
Which in itself is not a crime (strictly speaking!). The reasons for your excitement over his nomination are well-presented, and perhaps I can agree with you that there is a difference here, and that is that for once in appointing a crony, Bush has actually appointed someone who has the background for the job.

If he is as out-of-the-box as put forth, I look forward to his descriptions of Bush as a "blind man in a room full of deaf people."

6. Interesting choice. I don't know how this will play out.
There is this: http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/management/2004-02-01-insana_x.htm

And then this: http://www.nature.org/pressroom/press/press1315.html

Wonder what his position on global warming is?

"All charitable organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, have a special obligation to adhere to the highest standards of integrity and transparency," said Paulson. "The Conservancy has a heritage of which it is rightfully proud. My priority as Chairman is to continue to improve the way in which organization conducts its business, while ensuring that we carry on achieving meaningful results in the field of conservation."

Wonder what his position on transparency in government is?

Sheesh.. first thought in my head was a Field Marshall in "The Great Escape".. all of these guys look more and more like they could be wearing an SS uniform and asking for YOUR PAPERS to me..

Daddy WarBucks might be a good nickname for him, and he must be enjoying his new 27 Trillion dollar bank account just handed over to him by Bush Co, as long as they get their CUT, all is well.. :)

OR as Richard Pryor said about Reagan, "This guy looks like a DICK with Clothes on.."
