Memorial Day Truth: There Is No “War on Terror” (Firedoglake)
Memorial Day Truth: There Is No “War on Terror”
By Pachacutec

There is no "War on Terror."

There is, however, a "war" on the U. S. Constitution.

After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on. We’ve faced far worse threats to our national survival in our history - the Civil War, the War of 1812, World War II to name a few - but we never abandoned our Constitution. Until now.

Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A "War on Terror" is therefore a war on humanity. The Bush administration has exploited the fear and shock of a nation in the wake of a surprising and dramatic act of violence to whip national fear and paranoia into a constant boil. Why?

The evidence suggests the whole point has been to seize power and steal money. We are witnessing a creeping coup in the United States, the overthrow of the idea, promulgated by our founders and by writers like Tom Paine, that the "Law is King:"

But where says some is the king of America? I’ll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal of Britain. Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the king is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is.

There is a "war against poor brown people", a "war on human rights", a "war on anti-imperialism", a "war on people who want to control their own destiny," etc. Calling it like it is reveals its fundamental ugliness. The "war on terror," on the other hand, is propaganda and a scam. Turn off your TVs and forget about the so-called war on terror.

3. Agreed!
The writer fails, as many do on the left, to consistently link the corporate media as willing partners in the deception. BushCo is not doing these things in a vacuum and nor are they doing it alone. THE MESSAGE and the media megaphone cannot be unlinked or dealt with separately.

I heard an excellent example of the "big lie" today listening to Terry Gross on NPR. She was interviewing the guy who produced "Baghdad ER". They were discussing the hospital where a good part of the story was filmed. The producer claimed that the doctors there were treating "the enemy" alongside our troops. He also called the indigenous wounded "insurgents". There was no mention of the sectarian civil war taking place in Iraq right now. The wounded Iraqi could easily have been simply a Sunni or Shiite militiaman or possibbly a civilian. Any American listening to the program is spoon fed the black and white (and untrue) notion that there is just us and the "enemy" in Iraq. Gross did not challenege the producer on this fact or even ask how he knew this wounded Iraqi was our enemy.

Without challenging those that bring us the lies of BushCo wrapped up in a nice patriotic package, we are only attacking part of the problem.
