How important is it that Democrats make a stand on this nomination?
If they can't take a stand on illegal wars and radical Supreme Court nominations, what is left to take a stand on? If they are the opposition Party, shouldn't they oppose something every once in a while? Being slightly facetious, but isn't this important enough to take a stand against? Even if you lose, you will gain standing. Try it! You make like it.

2. They have opposed this nomination.
Didn't you listen to the hearings? It's obvious they oppose it. Unfortunately there is no way to stop it.

6. Yes there is
they just have to be willing to make a big enough stink.

However, I won't hold my breath.

7. They should still fight it to the end!
This nomination has ENORMOUS LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES for ALL Americans. They should be on record as doing everything they can to oppose it. (and 'who knows?' maybe they might actually win....but they can't 'win' unless they TRY...at least FREAKIN' TRY, D*mn it!)

4. I think we should filibuster.
I will be frank and say that I am dissappointed in 90% of the arguments against Alito, both here and in Congress (they almost all boil down to "He's a Conservative and we don't like him", and there are better and more cogent arguements than that), but the truth is this a nominee who believes in the power of the Executive to do whatever it wants whenever it wants.

5. They need to take a stand on SOMETHING
ANYTHING!!!

Please? And I mean a REAL stand.

A "THIS CANNOT HAPPEN IN AMERICA" stand.

A "WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO DEMOCRACY" stand.

A "I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TYRANNY OF THE MAJORITY" stand.

8. But they are fearful...
that they might lose some PR battle in the next election. At this time, they believe they might win back the House and/or Senate, and they don't want to take a gamble and lose it...How would you advise them on that fear??

12. So they're predicting that only RWers will be voting in 2006?
Last poll I saw said that a VAST majority of Americans want the next President to be "the opposite of Bush". So it only stands to reason that they also want their next house and senate leaders to ALSO be the opposite of *. The Democrats are alienating both the base and the majority of American voters by not acting as the opposition party. They seem to be convinced that only neo-cons will be voting in the next election, as those are the people they seem to be trying to appeal to.

13. Honestly, I am fed up with their 'PR' concerns
I am more concerned about the innocent people who are dying every day in the meantime.

I am more concerned with our nation spiraling into debt and fascism and hatred.

I say fuck the elections, I don't trust them anyway.

It isn't about them and their political future. It's about children with their limbs blown off and soldiers whose hearts are ruined for life from the things they've seen and done with my tax money.

I can't take it anymore.

9. The Dems can fillibuster
but it won't make any difference. Alito will be confirmed. Period.

This shoulod be a wake up call to those moderate Republicans who didn't believe that Bush would screw them over. Well, he did and thanks to them we all have to live with it.

Elections have consequences. Alito is a consequence of the Bush presidency.

10. Vital to the future of America as a Democracy
This nomination is the final blow to any chance we have of containing the bu$h regime from stripping us of all civil liberties.
Novembers election will mean nothing if Alito is confirmed as they will have free reign to steal any election without means of stooping them.

15. That is absolutely the way to go-----make sure that those who do not
oppose Alito are given as much publicity as we can give.

Vote the bastards out.

14. they will vote no and thats a stand
they can't accomplish anything more from a stand because the repubs appear united in their desire to confirm Alito. Do we really want to distract from repub corruption if we can't actually prevent the appointment.

They will vote against it and that is an appropriate stand given their numbers.

17. I don't know
I really think the repubs will employ the nuclear option which would nullify any filibuster. I also think neither side will benefit from public opionion if that happens. In the meantime, all the media will be talking about is that and Bush will get a pass on all the bad publicity he and the repubs are getting. I'm in favor of continuing to let the repubs destroy themselves with dems united against them but not looking desparate because they are powerless to do anything constructive.

18. We should dare them to go the "nuclear option"...
That has never been done before. If they do that, the government will be shut down. Let them know ahead of time: if they go the "nuclear option", the government will be shut down. That is their choice. Plant that seed. They have been forewarned. If they choose to push that button....
