Janeane is bailing out !
She's just announced that she will come in on a limited basis (a couple hours only for a couple days each week, then covering Friday's so Sam can have a day off), will no longer draw a salary, and recognizes that Sam is the better host.

As one who has knocked her style hard, I think this is really good for the show, and admire her to recognize Sam's talent.

Peace Janeane - I think this is all for the best.

2. Thank you, Janeane. I *love* the knowledge you add to the show and
I think Sam hit his stride while you were off doing West Wing. Once a week - guest spots will be great. I will be excited to see what you do next!

Sam is great on his own, too, but she brought a lot of info to the show that I didn't get anywhere else. Good for her for agreeing to come in occasionally, and for no salary no less! I have no doubt we'll see (and hear) plenty more from her.

She's passionate, feisty, and smart! She's on fire today!

I was glad to hear that she's still going to fill in for Sam when he's away. I do love listening to Sam as well. He's really come into his own.

14. The AAR station here doesn't carry her show anymore
They kept a few AAR shows, but switched to some Jones programming and a bunch of shows about gardening and money. But they used to carry Majority Report, and I remember liking it, especially compared to, say, hearing some guy give the same "advice" to all callers seeking a mortgage ("call my firm and I'll set you up!" -- basically a three-hour infomercial.)

I thought Janeane was great on the late & great "The Larry Sanders Show."

http://www.triotv.com/corp/press/2003/pr0708a.html

from the great Trio series, "Brilliant, but cancelled," about TV series that never made it

"Also airing within the "Brilliant, But Cancelled™" pilots week is Beat Cops. Filmed in a cinema-verite style and without a laugh-track, this half-hour comedy stars Sam Sedar and Jon Benjamin as two clueless New York City patrolmen who are oblivious to the volatile citizens around them. Sedar co-wrote the pilot with Charles Fisher."

36. Smart & Gracious Move
Janeane was a horrible host. She would interupt people making a point to discuss some unseen, unrelated event going on in the studio, turn virtually every discussion into a dime store psychoanalysis of the repugs, didn't want to talk calls, wouldn't annouce who was her guest coming in and out of breaks, etc. She just doesn't get talk radio. She obvisouly isn't a fan of the talk radio and doesn't want to learn the simplest conventions of the format.

Having said that she is fearless and passionate. I'll never forget she was virtually the only one pre-war who called bullshit on this adminstration and it's war plans publicly and without shame ( I will always love her for that!).I think she will make a better guest than host. Also I think she is fine actor and a little liberal hottie.

I won't go into her stand-up ability.

41. Could see this coming.
She's amazing in so many ways, but just not as a radio host. Her leaving is classy and that is to be expected too.

I'll never forget her losing it on air soon after Vote 04 when someone said Dems should try to find common ground with the right. She went completely nuts and ended in tears, but it was the most moving rant I've ever heard. It was funny, beautiful, sad, angry, articulate, precise, viscious...amazing.

But all that said, Seder is quite simply fantastic on his own and is improving every week. The show will be much improved with him on his own.

He'll also become AAR flagship host at some point I reckon.

And she's a superb human being! She's given so much of her time fighting the Bush regime and has been extremely supportive of the blogosphere. She was a great help when Take Back The Media was being sued by Talk Radio Network/Michael Savage.

47. It's interesting. Some people here are critical of Janeane's "hard style"
I wonder.

Why is it okay for a male like Mike Malloy, who I really like and respect, to have a "hard style", but for women, especially a feminine women, its not okay? Why is it they have to either be brawny like a man, or be soft and non confrontational, warm and sweet?

Women and Men both are a combination of many different characteristics and qualities.

Men have different styles and so do women.

However, women's various styles or ways are much more condemned and judged critically than most mens.

Our culture and certainly our media machine, dictates a strong and neverending (but inaccurate) message that women be sweet, non- confrontational, motherly, nurturing and pretty, or we should be ballsy, no-nonsense, tough handsome and funny and oh, we have to like men better than we like women.

We can't be allowed to treat genders equally or be gender neutral. On the whole, women who follow these guidelines are the ones who are allowed on the public airwaves.

What is so threatening for women to be who they are? We are a variation of so many things. People wonder why some women become angry and/or "hysterical" as many like to call a woman's anger. I would say because it's confining and suffocating in that little tiny box women are supposed to remain in. If you aren't a women, then perhaps it is harder for you to understand, but I hope those of you who aren't women, will try to understand.

Janeane in my opinion, knows more than most on Air America. Although I like Sam, he is funny and he's such a likeable person, but I don't think he's as knowledgeable or as intuitive as Janeane, and doesn't get to the core of issues like Janeane does.

This is a real loss in my opinion.

I am saddened that it seems we continue to silence the voices we need to hear the most. One of those is Janeane Garafolo. It's amazing how few strong women's voices that are truly intelligent are somehow conveniently dismissed from the places where they can have the most impact.

63. Fact is
Janeane is an artiste' whose creative spirit does not lend itself to a daily-or nearly daily routine.

Some people, particularly those focused on radio, will do well at it. Janeane is an actress but who has strong political leanings and who is quite articulate about her opinions. This does not, however, a talk show host make.

The new arrangement sounds like it is more in keeping with her personality. I am looking forward to her contributions. She is, as another poster pointed out, very good at turning up research and info not found anyplace else. I am glad she will be still be on the show and I look forward to hearing her.

67. That is not a fact. That's your opinion.

Which you're certainly entitled to, as is everyone else.

I believe we need many more 'creative spirits' on the radio than standard play it safers that don't try and initiate thought, or worse those radio hosts who try and demonize those that think differently than they do.

It seems most radio talk show hosts these days are either hired to be essentially harmless and funny, or preach and promote conformist/simplistic thoughts that are right wing based. They go for the cheap laughs and the easier, softer stuff that doesn't require anything of themselves really or of the listener. I tend to think with the state of this union, that is not a healthy thing for us, certainly not an empowering thing for citizens at large.

Perhaps that is why true artists by nature and trade aren't allowed more air time.

An artist, in any medium, is the eyes and ears so often of what is truly happening in the world. It is often the artist who leaves the imprint and can shift perspectives and open people's minds.

A trained artist is required to look below the surface of what is visable, and is trained to observe how people feel, think and respond to things and WHY they do. They are trained and encouraged to better understand peoples' behavior and motivations at a greater level than most.

True Artists on the whole are simply more awake than most people. That is why power abusers fear many artists - because artists have the power to inspire thought and creativity, and power abusers are addicted to control and suppressing others creative thought and inspiration.

You are SO doing the right thing--Sam is cerebral enough without you, and with your other interests, your commitment to Air America has always been questionable. On the other hand, this could be cover story for your being fired!
