Gitmo inmates attack guards stopping a suicide

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Prisoners wielding fans, light fixtures and other improvised weapons clashed with guards trying to stop a detainee from committing suicide at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the military said Friday.

Thursday's clash happened in a medium-security section of the camp, called Gitmo for short, as guards were responding to the fourth attempted suicide of the day at the detention center on the U.S. Navy base, Cmdr. Robert Durand said.

Detainees struck guards as they entered a communal living area to stop a prisoner who was trying to hang himself, Durand said.

Earlier in the day, three detainees in another part of the prison attempted suicide by swallowing prescription medicine they had been hoarding.

Grrr.... Some people just don't appreciate us trying to civilize them away from their barbaric belief systems. Can't they at least appreciate how we've protected them from living in the violent hell hole that Afghanistan has become?

3. So? Torture is unchristian. People are flawed.
After four years of prison, deprivation, torture for some of them, removal from family for all of them, humiliation, and hearing over and over that there's no hope of ever getting out... I'd say depression might start to sink in on some of them. My complaint is that we aren't deciding what the hell they are. POWs? Criminals? Guerillas? Pick one, already!

6. I read an article by the lawyer of one of the detainees that has been
trying to kill himself. I bawled my eyeballs out...

Before going into the bathroom he told his lawyer, My name is XXXXXXX, remember you talked with me, remember that I was a human being.

This should tell us all something about the conditions they are living in, and what they ultimately are.

I am Sproutster, I am a human being, and I am ashamed.
