16. According to this article, it is a target...
snip...
Christine Koch-Harris, who received a doctorate in French, wore an orange vest over her graduation gown and a target on her mortarboard, a mock reference to Cheney's accidental shooting of a hunting companion in February. But Koch-Harris was in the minority inside the assembly center, where the vice president received two standing ovations.

14. I'm surprised the SS didn't swoop down and
toss her out. And I love the target on the man who looks to be a prof. Brilliant.

I'm wondering how many others similarly signified their disgust with the Bush Crime Family.

Hard to believe that LSU invited Cheney in the first place. He was on vacation when Katrina hit and couldn't be bothered to put in an appearance anywhere on the Gulf for many days. No member of the cabal, whose negligence contributed to the death of thousands in that area, should have been allowed anywhere near that graduation.

First, thanks for the vote of confidence. Someone pointed me to this board when I was feeling a little worn down by some of the flak I was taking.

Second, the man in the target is my academic advisor, Jack Yeager. We were the only two people who I saw who did anything noticeable during the ceremony to indicate our displeasure with Cheney. Jack was the one who originally suggested a little civil disobedience, so he deserves most of the credit. It was a memorable experience--I had to walk TWO FEET in front of Dick in my vest, yikes. They tell me he chuckled. I didn't look--it would have turned my hair white to see him chuckle. I just kept chanting "Colbert, Colbert, Colbert" to get my nerve up. Because frankly, this was nothing in comparison with the press correspondent's dinner speech.

Finally, here's a picture of the hat:

It reads "Don't shoot anyone! We're NOT that kind of doctor!"... the little stickers were intended for a scrapbook and are a camo hunting jacket, a rifle, and earphones of the variety worn when shooting. There was a little camo hat, but it's apparently fallen off.

Incidentally, I think Dick may have stayed awake during the entire ceremony, but I almost fell asleep. His prefab speech... well, let's just say it didn't put the "fab" in prefab.

Thanks from this tired old fart. It takes a lot to make a stand where people might think it's not "appropriate" Reminds me of HS graduation in 71. I can't believe we still have to protest this shit!

54. Thank you!
It always takes a lot of bravery to stand up for something when others are just going along -- meaning "being scared out of one's wits and doing it anyway because you know it's the right thing to do", and not "having no fear" (which would be some kind of self-destructive psychopathy, assuming anyone is capable of that).

But every time one person digs deep and finds that courage, others are encouraged too, and more stand up for what's right. Your seemingly lonely act will generate a cascade of other brave acts, until we're all brave enough to throw off this national nightmare.

Edited on Mon May-22-06 05:22 PM by LouisianaLiberal
It was discouraging to think that LSU students and faculty cheered him.

I'm curious to know what most LSU students think now, and if any announcements were made to discourage protesting. Two or three years ago Bush spoke at the ceremony, and apparently everyone was made aware that it was forbidden to protest.

Thanks again. You've made my day.

55. 1st Amendment Apparently Still Valid....
Nope, nothing like that. Not that I saw. Just urging us not to carry signs on *posts* which can be weapons, and no "distracting" decorations on hats. I imagine that would involve... what? A live quail with a sign around its neck saying "Ha ha ha, Ya Missed me, Dick!" around its neck?

No one tried to stop me at all or made a peep. Not going through the metal detectors or going past the SS guys on stage (although they looked deeply unhappy with me)...

So at least on this one day, the first amendment was protected. If only a few more people had taken advantage of that fact.

Kudos to the glitter Anti-W hat!
