So Republicans are losing their faith in * and the Republican party. This could be a very good thing, if they can be convinced that what they actually need to do is come over to the side of sanity. Unfortunately, I fear that many of the ones who are leaving Republicanism in disgust are going to end up falling to the extreme right, rather than deciding to vote Democratic.

We could be in for some scary stuff down the road if the wackier fringe of the right wing picks up support from those who thought * was "too soft."

1. If they go extremist, that could work in our favor
The majority of * voters aren't right wing nutcases, they're just average Americans who've been hoodwinked. Like my mother, for example. The hardcore loonies, the 29%, will only scare the bejeezus out of the ordinary people by showing their true colors. Remember what happened during the Schiavo circus. Not only that, but a real extremist movement will siphon off votes from the GOP. So I say, go Nazi you crazy fucks. You're already halway there.

2. it could be argued...
that the split could begat a spoiler who might help dilute that vote. That didn't hurt the Democrats in 1992 or the GOP in 1980.

Just sayin'.

3. I think they'll just stay home and complain.
I seriously doubt the'd skew to the RW, and some who have been Pubs all their lives won't be able to convince themselves to vote for a Dem.

4. Good question......
It's important to remember that Bush is pleasing no one right now: Not the Religious Right, or old style Conservatives, or the "let's use military force to take over the whole world for ourselves" crowd. And you're right that many of those folks will never vote Dem.

The good news is that the extreme Righties are likely to not vote at all if they get disgusted enough with the GOP. That's their history. The alleged shift to the Right in this country, which so many who should know better believe, is really the fact the GOP has convinced the Far Right 30% of the population to vote. For them. That 30% has almost all voted in the last few election years, while the other 70% of the population is voting less and less. My guess it the RW nuts will go sulking back to their caves, and the sane folks will realize they must participate.
