Attacked, threatened by mob in attempt to deny me my Bush protest
Edited on Thu May-18-06 02:56 PM by expatriot
DU, listen to my tale and give me a hug. I need one. I will post media links when available. On update: First media mention:

Bush arrival prompts heated exchange between protester, Bush fans No mention of the arrest.

I was physically assaulted, this assault was cheered on by what cannot be described as anything other than a mob. My sign was ripped from me and destroyed and then mob denies truth to cops. Thank god for the television crew that caught a lot of it on tape.

For a few days now, word has been out that Bush is coming to town but since there was no schedule initial attempt to organize anything by local Democrats fizzled. No schedule so people just gathered across the street from the Yuma Marine Air Corps Station. It is the fairgrounds parking lot. I entered the parking lot around nine-ish, the rumor was that he would be there about ten-ish. I thought I would meet up with the usual handful of us local activists but come to think of they all have day jobs (and I work in the afternoon and nights) so I even though I saw one San Diego-area immigrant activist there, I was the only other one I saw. I wore a white t-shirt and a black armband that I had made myself out of a black dress sock but it looked really good. My sign on foamboard said "SAVE AMERICA: IMPEACH BUSH" on one side and "2,455 U.S. DEAD BECAUSE YOU MISLED" on the other. From the get-go I was verbally assaulted. What the hell is up with "Get a job!"? or "Go back to Mexico!" Then I was confronted with the common misconception in those circles of freepers that there are multiple levels of American citizenship, you have more rights to free expression and political speech if you have served in the military.

So Air Force One lands. I am minding my business alongside 32nd ST holding my sign when their anger at me begins to crescendo. They move around me. An older gentlemen behind be tries to grab my sign. I keep hold of it. He then wraps his arm around me, trying to hold me while he tries to remove my sign. He is older so my first thought is not try and hurt him. I watch my elbows, making sure they don't swing back, etc. He grabs my sign away and begins crumbling it up. The crowd cheers him. He still has a hold of me. Another man with a cooler head pulls him off of me. I get my sign back. battered, torn at the edges... myself a bit shaken. hold up my sign again. A second group approaches me. shouting at me. The older man returns tries to grab the sign again. It is becoming a frenzied mob. A self-identified young off-duty Marine comes up behind me and yanks my sign away and rips it to shreds. I go to a San Diego news van to ask them if they had pictures. The cops arrive. And so I go back to the area, surrounded by Bushies and the cop asks the crowd "did anyone see anything? They were all like "we didn't see nothing. did you see anything? no I didn't see nothing" Then my support comes. A San Diego news crew says they got footage and still shots. Some other of the few protesters that were in the back (probably who called the cops but perhaps a number of people did when they saw it was starting to get out of control)came forward. They arrested the old man upon evidence supplied to them by the San Diego camera crew. Local media was soon there. Bushies drove by shouting at me "Shame on you!" "Go back to Mexico! (WTF? For one thing I am non-hispanic caucasian and the very ominous "Watch your back! You got yours coming!" After a little bit, many Bush supporters were starting to trickle forward and telling the cops the truth but not before many, many of them flat out lied to the cops. The motorcade never passed out. It slipped out another gate. I am so upset. My fucking rights were denied. I was physically threatened, physically assaulted. My personal property was yanked from me and destroyed and if that is not enough, now I have to worry about the safety of my loved ones (unidentified because I am actually AFRAID).

WTF people.... I have to go to work in less then an hour. I am sunburnt and tired. I am still in shock. Is this not America? Is Bush's numbers not at like 29%? I went into the lion's den I guess and they felt threatened.

206. Lived In No. San Diego in 2003. Now France
we would organize protests in Oceanside and Escondido. That is rabid Freeper country...In front of the Oceanside mall all we had is taunts and objects throw at us. But, In Escondido country..(Home of the Duke") In front of CUnningham's office, two cars actually threatend to run over us. One car actually came over the curb...Police were nearby. Did not seem too upset by such tactics.
Now sour events have the Freepers on the run. They must be really brimming with anger. Here in the south of France, we find political discourse far more rational. You can talk w/o being called names. Of course even those on the right think BUsh a nutjob.

for assault and for destruction of personal property? You might want to talk to a lawyer. What was done to you was assault and it's illegal. The news crew has the pictures to prove it.

You have every right to sue both the old man and the "marine" (if he really was a marine). In fact, it would be very patriotic to do so.

143. Exactly...
in fact, if he is active duty he could be court-martialed for that. He is sworn to defend the Constitution against all enemies. What he did was obviously a violation of that sworn duty. Assault and battery and conduct unbecoming....he would have to serve his time in military prison, and then, once out, give to the Marines all the time left on his contract.

158. Yes. That was an assault on a citizen.
If you do nothing, that's tantamount to letting them know they can attack people like you with impunity - and suffer no consequences. You were PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED. I'd press charges. ASAP. Call the ACLU. This is a free speech violation by a mob of anti-American, domestic terrorist thugs. If their shitty behavior is not checked, think of what they'll do next time. Next time you might find yourself in the hospital. Or worse. Or they'll try it with somebody else and really cause some serious injury because they'll likely be MORE angry by then.

I'd say press the case. And next time, DON'T GO ALONE!!!! And preferably - have people with you who are rolling videotape or taking photos.

I am also glad that they arrested the older guy who physically assaulted you, and grabbed you and ruined your sign. Did they do anything to the off-duty Marine?

162. I tend to believe that the country would be better off to split...
How that could be accomplished, I have no idea, but it's clear to me that a large portion of the country has chosen a different path than the one establish by the founders. So I tend to think both sides would be better off if we just parted ways. One country (ours) would continue as the founders intended. The other would continue down the corporatist path they love so much.

In many ways we already have two separate countries. Example: I don't consider Bush to be my president - I see him as their president. I feel like my country ceases to exist while under their control. Another example: Patriotism isn't really a virtue anymore... whether one is patriotic or not depends entirely upon who is running the show. When the republicans are at the helm, in many ways it's an entirely different country than the one the founders established. So how is it virtuous to be patriotic when we're suddenly living in a predatory country that openly condones torture, spying on its citizens, and countless other evils? That certainly isn't our country - is it? And if it isn't, wouldn't patriotism be a vice under those circumstances?

In a way we have already split - so why force two groups - one that believes in the constitution, and one that clearly hates it - to swap governments periodically and live under a regime that either one or the other despises? Oh, there will always be things we don't like about the powers that be, but this is different; here we're talking about irreconcilable differences that strike at the very core of what makes this country what it is (or used to be).

So maybe the time has come to split.

If not, refuse to settle and take them to court. The jury will award $5-10 million, easy.

Jury verdicts aren't based on a "ability to pay" basis.

If the man can't pay, then the verdict is a liability, hanging over his head like an unpaid bill. There are, however, various ways of going after the money.

I understand a Jury verdict isn't based on an ability to pay, however I would assume that you can't settle out of court for say a million dollars with no way to pay it...can you?

And even if you could what's the point? You put a lien on his 30k shack?

128. The republican party
has deep pockets. They should pay financially and politically for thier actions. Rest assured if the situation was democrats assulting repukes it would automatically go forward to get it all over the news.

The demonstration was a republican event. Event organizers are responsible to provide for security. That is usually the provision of local law enforcement presence. I would look at injunction upon gathers of a class of folks that have shown in the past to engage in violent activity. This is similar to the protection required around protecting those attempting to enter womens health centers that provide abortions. The injunction should be federal to protect us nationwide and include provision that a permit must be applied for each gathering. It is the permit procedure that sets out the number of law enforcement, distance to be maintained from opposing interest etc. When violence is a demonstrable based on prior actions of a given group there is precedence. It is likely that a "pattern and pratice of abuse" could be shown by witnesses from other gatherings of brown-shirted repukes coming in contact with Americans.

Protection of 1st Amendment is almost the exclusive territory of ACLU. I would start there. They take on cases like the one in DC to protect six KKKers (who applied for a permit to march WH to capitol) against 25,000 angry black DC residents. ACLU insured ther right to be there and forced the court to establish police protection, even though thier org is opposed to the KKK activity. 1st Amendment actions usually go to the front of thier line.

Be up front that you would like to enjoin future activities of this group of demonstrators to protect others coming behind you. It is reasonable that opposition groups should be able to attend such events with a reasonable degree of certainty that they will not be assaulted. Repukes should be mayed to pay with actual damages (value of sign, and torn shirt, missed work and the like), and punitive damages that the court could assign to make an example of the offending group as a incentive to prevent future attacks. That's where the millions are a real potential and not something to scoff at. Your looking at early retirement. To be perfectly frank, they fucked up if you get legal assistance.

Also, it is necessary in politically polarized events to have legal observing teams in place to gather evidence like pictures and video. Legal observers prevent violence when those attending demonstrations know they will be on film. You are lucky that press was there and willing to share with law enforcement of what occurred. Don't be surprised when the press requires a subpoena to turn over footage as they are under no obligation to provide you with evidence for you in a civil matter. As to the criminal matter, the assault, they almost had to give it up to police. Act fast though as ACLU will press an immediate hold on the footage before they erase it. The owners of the press are most likely repubs and will proceed to get rid of the evidence. Good luck and keep us posted.

27. Wow, I am so sorry you had to go through that
People are getting so defensive, and feel so threatened now. The 'true-believers' are becoming more dangerous by the day. I have been demonstrating almost every weekday for a couple months now and recently a guy in a big SUV came careening around the corner, tires squealing, two wheels ON THE SIDEWALK where I was standing...obviously trying to intimidate.

It's getting bad. You are SO BRAVE for doing that on your own, and for holding your ground. Use the fear and the anger as motivation, as a reminder of what we are up against, how grave and dark it is.

We have a really big fight ahead of us, and it is only going to get worse. We have to be prepared.

Don't despair. We will overcome some day...

Meganmonkey said, It's getting bad.

I maintain that they were always violent. The only reason we didn't see more of their violence (yet we have seen plenty) is that for so long they appeared to be in the catbird seat. Now that they are going down in flames, their desperation is apparent and it's all the easier for the violence to find its expression.

I say this because right before 2000's stolen election, I spoke with a bush appointee. This person and I talked for several hours and in that time, it became obvious to me that this individual had an obsession with bush getting into office. I concluded he would do anything--anything--to get his "man" in.

He told me that if bush didn't win the election there would be rioting and blood running in the streets. He was highly emotional when he told me this. Whatever--they were all drinking the same kool-aid and I do believe there would have been violence had they not pulled off their stolen election.

Consequently, when the brownshits derailed the Florida vote count, I wasn't all that surprised.

Nor does this surprise me. It will be interesting as the identities of these people emerge.

I'm not surprised that the Bush supporters are as thuggish as their 'leader'.

What's important is that you stood for something positive, while they stood for war, death, corporatism and greed.

I've protested Bush when he came to my city, but fortunately I was in a large crowd of anti-Bush folks. You were much, much more calm in the face of violence than I might have been - I suspect there are more than a few here (myself included) who might have been tempted to swing back.

All the best to you...I hope you treat yourself tonight with your favorite dinner, you deserve it!

I give expat a lot of credit for his self-control; if that was me having a mob trying to pull a sign out of my hand, I would have had difficulty keeping my fists to myself.

Be sure to go to the man's hearing and testify against him. Then take him to small claims court and sue for damages.

Make sure to tell the other activists in town what happened so they can watch your back. Immediately report any threatening phone calls, etc. Terroristic threatening is against the law, as is harrassment-and you can also sue for civil damages.

Get to a shrink and get put on meds for depression as a result of the assault. Lawsuits are about proving damages and doctor bills are proof of damages. Your life was threatened and that's very serious. Sue the Marine Corps and the locals for not having adequate security. It's about finding the deepest pockets. And when these yahoos get on the witness stand the loose associations and thought disorders will surface. Demand a jury trial.

With 29% approvals? The Bushcists are cowards. It takes a mob of them to tear down a guy's
sign, they won't enlist in their Holy War to Save Civilization and Bring On Armageddon. The
Republican Revolution that started in the Newt Gingrich days has gone completely corrupt and
it's exhausted. Its only vision is more of the same. More wars, bigger tax cuts, expansion of
executive powers.

It was in the classic tradition of non-violent protest. Perhaps some people in the mob will themselves be shamed by the display put on by their ideological partners. You did a very good thing here. These people are no different (and in some cases, they are the very people) than the firehose wielding racists confronted in dignity by the civil rights movement. And, like those douchebags, they will lose.

Look at who these people's heroes are - Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, etc.... These guys are so small minded and afraid of anything that doesn't fit into their small view of the make-believe world they live in, that when someone comes along that they don't agree with, the only thing they can think of doing is physically or verbally taking them down. They have no brains so they can't reason with you. Facts get in their way. They can't battle you with logic because it's not on their side. The only recourse they have is to shut you up.

Bush arrival prompts heated exchange between protester, Bush fans

SUN STAFF REPORT
May 18, 2006, 12:14 pm

Heated words were exchanged at the Yuma County Fairgrounds this morning when a protester held up an anti-President Bush sign as the president was arriving in Yuma.

Yuma police officer talks with Bush protester Ed Snook after incident. Sun Photo/Diana Suarez

...snip....

"Get rid of that sign," said one person.

Snook, responding to hecklers, said he had a right to walk along the street in protest.

One man eventually pulled the sign out of Snook's hand and destroyed it.

80. Why wasn't that brownshirt Marine arrested too for
malicious destruction of property and assault? He needs to be reported to his superiors as I'm sure his behavior is not allowed while on active duty.

What jerks! I would have screamed my bloody head off and hit back and told them to get the *uck away from me!

Thank you for being so courageous!

82. This shows the mentality of Bush voters
First, let me give you a big hug... It's the bravery of ordinary people like you, who will keep this country from becoming a fascist state. I'm afraid we're already pretty much there, but there will always be people like you to stop this regime, and spread the truth of what Bush has done.

It's scary to think that after he has done, after lying us into war, bankrupting the country, spying on citizens, and using torture, some delusional people still back him. I believe that his base will be shown to be as twisted and corrupt as he is. I hope the people who assaulted you will be held accountable.

Stay strong. You have my sincere respect and admiration. Let me give you another

83. Cowardly Brownshirts! They need a mob to attack one person! Then they
lie to the police, afraid of the consequences of their actions!! Why is this no surprise?

Sorry this happened to you, but all they did was show the world what a bunch of cowardly thugs they are ~ that's Bush's 'backwash'! Soon, it's going to be hard to find anyone decent in this country who will admit ever supporting him!

I agree with those who said you should sue ~ but make sure you have protection. They are the last dregs of those who support this president and they are feeling so threatened and cornered.

You had courage ~ I bet not one of them would have the guts to go alone into a mob of lunatics like that ~ they'd run back to their mommies. Glad the press got pictures, and it sounds like someone was concerned enough to call the police, and probably supported you!

I have seen a bumper sticker which reproduces the famous "United States of Canada/Jesusland" map, but with the red(neck) states marked "Real Americans" and the Blue States and Canada marked "Foreigners". Now it seems that the Bushisti regard the rest of us as Mexicans, regardless of our ethnic origin. No doubt they have already forgotten that last month, Ay-rabs were supposed to be the enemy. Airstrip One is at war with Eurasia. Airstrip One has always been at war with Eurasia.

139. Remember....this happened in Arizona...
That might not be pertinent...but in a way, it is...IF Arizona supports *, I can see how it might happen...because..illegal immigrants have caused lots of problems in that state...and tensions run high...I have read horror stories about farmers/people who live close to the border and what they have gone through..people have died trying to defend their own property...

I send you my hug, expatriot, because in spite of what goes on with illegal aliens in that state, and no matter what problems they cause the locals, there is NO excuse for the way you were treated...absolutely NONE...I hope you are ok..

I also suggest everyone pay strict attention, because this nastiness, exhibits exactly how dangerous this bunch and their followers really are..remember the civil war where neighbor killed neighbor over the right to own slaves? Could it be, we are headed in the same direction once again, over illegal aliens? Could this be the whole purpose for the immigration issue becoming so front/center now, all of a sudden...?? (anything in order to declare martial law and dispense troops)

That seems to be the only support left to the Busies, the mob. I despair for the country, because even if (when) we bring the government back to sanity, we will have to contend with that vicious mob. Those people ought to have been ashamed of themselves. The virulence of their attack just shows how bad things are looking for them. Nazis. Not my fellow Americans.

When they lose everything because of their hero, I hope I can manage not to laugh in their pathetic loser faces. 401k gone? Oh too bad. Should have planned ahead. No medical insurance? Then die. Losing all they've worked for their whole lives? Oh well. Start over. Their misery and a dime will but them a ride to the rescue mission. Fuck 'em all.

Unfortunately, some of us, (Americans), have no clue what it means to be one, (an American.) You can go back through the entire history of this country and find incidences like yours. Luckily you survived. Luckily somebody was arrested and whether anything ever happens to him over it, or not, he still has to suffer the inconvenience of being arrested and having to make court appearances. If the judge is any good, he'll have the guy write the First Amendment 1,000,000 times, while he cools off in jail for a while.

I commend you for having the cajones to do what you did. Bravo! You are a REAL American!

I would've let them have it for assaulting you like that. Usually I am pretty mild-mannered in public, but when it comes to Freepers I am anything *but* mild-mannered. People like Rush Limbaugh & Bill O'Reilly have turned conservatives into sick, ugly people. I don't mind having a civil debate with them, and I don't have a problem with them believing differently than I do. I *do* have a problem with their fascist behavior. It's disgusting that we have people like that in America. They should be ashamed of themselves. Did we fight Hitler in WWII for nothing? We fought a fascist, & yet we are now turning into fascists ourselves? It's an insult to everything America is supposed to stand for.

of the repugs and the way things always are with them. Back in 1984 myself and a couple of dozen demonstrators barely managed to escape being beaten by a mob of drunken repugs at a park in Orange Co (CA) where Raygun was holding a re-election rally. We got no help from the police or anyone else and literally had to outrun them.:scared: Notice how when a hand-full of them shows up at any of our events the police protect them.

I guess the neocons/neonazis/ultrabushies, or whatever you want to call these cretins, feel threatened more easily these days because of Bush's plummeting approval ratings. And they're terrified of the idea of *gasp* liberals and Democrats taking back the House or the Senate, possibly both, this fall, and maybe even getting a Democrat into the White House in 2008. Their day in the sun is coming to and end, and they know it.

So deeply sorry you went through this ordeal. We don't live by mob rule in this country - or at least we didn't until this ignorant, thieving, conniving bunch of criminals moved to D.C.

I don't know what the law is in Arizona, but you could press charges against the perpetrators for physical and verbal assault, as well as battery. Were any of the mob participants wearing or saying anything that would associate them with Free Republic? If so, you could sue them from here to eternity. Use the video and stills from the San Diego film crew to make your case. Open and shut case.

You're a better person than I am, expatriot. If that old man had his arms locked around me, I would've forgotten my manners and lit into him -and anybody else that tried to start something. He deserves to do some jail time, since his obvious intention was to put you in harm's way.

The populist hero is our Truthdigger of the Week.

You can follow any of the links below to get a full picture of the man, the encounter and the dust-up he left in his wake.

But if you want a little dessert before eating your vegetables, check out McGovern’s account of a cheeky piece of anti-Rumsfeld propaganda he came upon at the Atlanta forum. It was distributed by The World Can’t Wait, an organization dedicated to driving President Bush from office.

hen I walked into the place, I wrangled a ticket very surreptitiously. I was met with this little blurb on Donald Rumsfeld, and as I read it, I had to chuckle. It says:

There’s going to be a question-and-answer period, but please adhere to these guidelines. Refrain from using the word ‘lie’ in relation to the war in Iraq. Do not question the secretary’s personal responsibility for torture. And please don’t discuss first use of nuclear weapons against Iran. If you violate these guidelines, you’ll be immediately removed from the auditorium, flown to an undesignated prison location somewhere in Eastern Europe and tortured. Thank you for your cooperation. The World Can’t Wait.

A wonderful, wonderful group. Those were the folks that spoke up and tried to brace Donald Rumsfeld with the lies and their charges of him being—and he is, arguably—a war criminal. And we shouldn’t shy away from saying that.”http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20060505_truthdigger_week_ray_mcgovern

I would be in contact with the DA as to why obstruction charges were not filed against those who blatantly attempted to thwart the law and cover up each other's culpability in this series of crimes.

Even those who stood idly by have some culpability, if they lied to law enforcement. I am not sure how the law works with police records, but I would want all those names and officers notes from this conspiracy to avert justice. Great that you survived this. That is so awesome a film crew was there as well.

I commend you on your courage. It took real balls to stand up to those jackbooted thugs. Here is to hoping some serious charges are filed.

207. Protesting and Protection
If there are recurrences, what would be the implications on
protesting in our country? A simple sign could put you in
danger. How can we continue to promote our messages peacefully
in this environment?

Hopefully this is an isolated occurrence. But, with growing
tensions growing between all sides, how can we not only combat
these types of situations, but how can we more readily prevent
them?

One of the more obvious safety precautions could arise in
numbers. One protester is a target, a mass is something far
more bold.

Many minuscule actions could be taken, varying from event to
event, but are there any broad ideas to approach this
potential problem?

What happens if we can't find an answer?

227. You are a TRUE PATRIOT.
And those people are the scum of the Earth.

Be proud of yourself. And I hope that guy rots in jail.

234. You threatened their fantasy world with destruction, and that's
why they attacked you. In their mind it was self-defense.

Nothing pisses stupid people off more than proof that they're wrong.

236. More like the Coliseum than den
The net results can only encourage you. Those people in the crowd who were curiosity seekers, peaceful supporters or freepers with a shred of decency might be shamed into turning more to the light. You were attacked possibly by lost causes, but they too could be traumatized and changed by their own loss of control. The people who helped you were forced to choose what is right and could very possibly by completely turned around. At least you actually received support from heroic crowd members and the news crew and then the law. Some people have lonelier, more tragic confrontations than that. Some shrink and run at less than that.

You peacefully held your ground, elicited positive responses, exposed the worst and defended yourself displaying true values. And through all this- and after, you remained sanely afraid.

A heroic casebook story. You have personally diminished evil and touched the hearts with truth.

FROM STAFF REPORTS
Sign damaged, man arrested after struggle over speech
May 18, 2006, 6:16 pm

A Yuma Democratic activist who said he was protesting peacefully had his anti-Bush sign destroyed and another man was arrested Thursday as Air Force One was landing in Yuma.

Ed Snook, one of Yuma's most outspoken and visible liberal activists, was walking along 32nd Street with a sign that said "Save America, Impeach Bush, 2,455 U.S. Dead Because You Misled."

snip

Keath said he was nowhere near Snook and had nothing to do with it. "I was never within 20 feet of the guy," he said. "The only time I walked over toward the roadway was to walk over to talk to a Spanish guy who was holding an American flag. I was standing by my car."

snip

Snook was at work Thursday afternoon and unavailable for comment. However, a post on the Democratic Underground Web site offers a description of the events. The post, written under the screen name "expatriot," was unsigned but was clearly by Snook

241. Yes! I've been waiting to hear this.
The Old SOB can deny it all he wants but it sounds like the video evidence got him.

Meanwhile, I hope expatriot can see now what a proud thing he did.

He should get the Stephen Colbert family jewels award.
