At the video rental place, I catch part of a conversation between a customer and the cashier. They're talking about a previous customer who had left shortly before -- it was a Chinese middle-aged man and his daughter. While the daughter spoke perfect Portuguese, the father spoke it in an extremely fractured, to the point of uselessness, fashion. They rail against their "unwillingness to assimilate," how they should speak the language of the country, how they are "closed within their tribe," how "they only think about money," etc etc etc.

It's an old, oft-repeated story, and I didn't like it at any of its previous enactments.

So, take heart. It's not just the USA that sucks. It's the entire fucking world.
