You would cry too if it happened to you. Can you imagine just finding out for the first what a bastard you have married? I thought we were the party of compassion.

If Alito is confirmed, we are in really serious trouble as a nation.

11. Go and watch the video
It was a pure performance. Crooksandliars.com has it. She is looking at the camera with her smurk and than, as on cue, she cries. Bullshit. Her husband is a rascists fascists and should be called on it if he is going to effect Americans for years to come. Don't like it? Too fucking bad. Nobody is making you be there!

And, TV analysts quickly said they doubted it would persaude anyone. And I'm sure she's known for years she is married to a numbnut ... she arouses about as much sympathy as one would have for Osama bin Laden! Her husband is probably going to be wrecking the USA for lots longer than OSB, and it will affect our great-great-grandchildren. She was crying purely crocodile tears!

It must be very hard to find out your husband sold his soul and it must be terribly difficult living a life without one.

Seriously though, I can't blame her for crying, if he's turned down she's the wife of a loser, if he is promoted to the Supreme court he'll destroy her country. It must be very hard on her.

Speaking of tears, does anyone remembe when George H. W. Bush's said "Don't cry for me, Argentina" during one of his speeches as president? And how in the world was it relevant to whatever it was he was talking about??

You would cry too if it happened to you

Long before her moment of Thespian glory, I saw Ms. Alito, sitting in back of "Swing 'em High" Sam, but did not know who she was.

But on Tuesday evening, after watching her on PBS/McNeil-Lehrer, I was of a mind to write that if the woman sitting behind Alito's right shoulder (actually, she seemed more to perch on his shoulder, advising, like some evil parrot at a pirate's ear) was in any way related to the nominee, it should be grounds for the dismissal of the nominee!

Did *anyone* see how GD smug she looked in the first couple of days hearings?

If the public is to watch Mrs. Alito's weeping and moaning because Sam got a Soap Opera Softball thrown from Sen. Lindsey Graham, then it should be on a split screen with Tuesday's pictures of the same woman looking like the Queen of Hearts waiting to shout "Off with Their Heads!"

IMHO, that's a lady with an agenda. If we want to known how Alito will vote, we should have her weepy butt up on that stand. The damned parrot is the real brains of the Alito family.

21. She can cry if she wants to, I'm fine with that - it's the news
stations making a huge sensational deal out of it, and politicizing it that offends me. A person crying is not news...unless you want to use it as a means to an end. (Make the Dems look mean and unsympathetic for "picking on" the Alitos.)

Nobody gave hours and hours of coverage to Teresa Heinz Kerry when her husband was the brunt of baseless attacks and outright lies during the 2004 election. CNN and C-SPAN did not devote a whole day's headlines to how upset she was to see her spouse smeared. Alito's hearing is a necessary one, that is part of every judicial nomination. He is being interviewed for one of the most important positions there is to fill. Yes, some of the questions will be tough. I'm not really sure why his wife was present at all, (is this common with these hearings?) but I'm sure she knew it would be a tough time. If she got upset, so be it, I don't fault her that.

I do fault the corporate media for making it news. It isn't. The Democrats did not "make Mrs. Alito cry." She cried because she got upset after sitting in on a tough questioning of her husband which she knew full well was going to happen.

She intimated that was perhaps the reason Mrs. Alito was shedding crocodile tears.

Fortunately, Bob Sheiffer balanced it out with some comment at the end of the story (can't remember exactly what he said) that more or less said the Democrats weren't THAT vicious.

51. I don't think we need to loose our ability to empathize. At the same
time we can talk about the issue - that Dems are finally fighting back as adults and asking tough questions... not smearing. So the hypocrisy of the right is exposed - as they wail for her bad moment. Because they have done much worse to many. And if they don't see the hypocrisy they are indeed totally tribal. They don't see the pain they cause. In Iraq with Rummy sitting on the defense budget and refusing to anti-up so he has a kick ass legacy of transforming the military. As governance is diminished by anti-bureaucrats who take perverse pleasure in the crisis in people's lives they think will lead to political & social transformation. At so many levels - the cries are ignored.

I'm uncomfortable that she cried. Surely she should have been better prepared. What was her husband thinking in not preparing her for the worst. Tough, tough questions. And the reaction of freepers shows again the unbelievable way they share their empathy only with those who narrowly reflect their own dam selves. It is not only hypocritical - it is also a national tragedy.
