A powerful weapon against NSA spying
But should you use it?

It's called a "false positive", and it works something like this: every phone call or email you make, include the following words:

Allah bomb destroy destruction attack kill weapon casualty gas nuclear fallout death nerve anthrax ricin sarin vtx core dispersion etc. etc.

These words are obviously protected by free speech. There is no threat involved. But by including these words in your correspondence, as you are Constitutionally entitled to, you are flooding NSA computers with "false positives" and helping to render spying on innocent civilians pointless.

I have mixed feelings about this. I WANT the NSA to catch terrorists. I want a safe environment for my family. But I'll be damned if I'll fork over the 4th amendment and allow them prying into my private communications to achieve that goal.

What say you, DU?

3. I Understand the Sentiment,
but I would rather find a combination that can't be seen as impeding the government's ability to catch terrorists or investigate WMDs. I don't know what that would be offhand.

4. "impeding the government's ability to catch terrorists"
the purpose of the NSA program is not to catch terrorists, so you don't have to worry about that. The purpose of the program is to spy on their political adversaries, identify dissidents, etc. if they wanted to catch terrorists, they would have caught OBL a long time ago.

6. Maybe the purpose is both
but it's amazing how lackadaisical people have gotten about giving up privacy and checks on power.

If you give it privacy, the government will more than happily take it. Same goes for power.

16. I'm amazed at how much people give away bits of their privacy all the time
I'm astounded at how many people I know don't think twice about compromising their privacy when applying for a job, or giving their Social Security to folks who have no business asking for it.

I had a week long contract job where I was asked to sign a release form for a background check that included the right for them to speak to anyone and everyone I've ever known, protected them from liable against slander, do a credit check, and pry into all sorts of personal things that had nothing to do with my ability to perform the job. Of course I refused to sign it, but many people I know sign those things all the time because they don't want to 'rock to boat', or they're afraid they won't get the job otherwise.

Seems to me that little bits of our privacy get chipped away all the time so that we're just used to it.

5. The NSA is All About
The NSA is all about stifling dissent and instilling in decent Americans a fear -- or terror -- of speaking the truth -- especially speaking the truth to POWER.

I wonder how many good, decent Americans have already "disappeared" because of what the NSA heard.

10. Non-security noise
That's not what they're looking for. Try words from one of these sets
All sorts of Java and Linux and Unix and assembler commands and calls and diagnostics - with "Diebold" prominently thrown in --regedit diebold buffer overload cyclic redundancy indirect address cache overload goram.

Potential GOP candidates and hints of opposition research - Allen bj jebbie boozer doctor bill cheated doctor bill vivisection mitt polygamy traficante (this was what started Watergate)

What? They're data mining us?

So what else is new. Herbert Hoover had the dirt on my Grandpa, i'm sure of it. Not that there was any dirt to be had, but i'm still sure of it.

I need to start working on integrating PGP keys into message board software.

That or revive the concept of dialup BBS systems.

12. Exactly. It's high time to integrate PGP in ALL COMMUNICATIONS
The NSA computers can overheat for all I care. I'm going back to using PGP in email correspondence, and I'd like to figure out how to use it with Vonage (if possible).

The sad fact is one where if PGP was widely used at the time it was developed this whole NSA TOTALITARIAN program would be moot.
