5. Can you enroll online?

I have to sign up my mom and have been dreading it and procrastinating. Is there an online form? How did you select your provider?

6. It probably won't help your mother, but ...

... on Thursday, I signed up online with the cheapest Humana program ($7.32).

I take no prescription drugs and did this reluctantly -- only to avoid the punitive penalty.

The odd thing was that -- instead of an online page where I could pay (Visa, MC etc) -- all I got was a confirmation number.

You and your mother are a little late in the game. Go to medicare.gov and look for the page that has listings of the Medicare D plans in your state. Make a list of your mother's meds and go through the plans that have those meds and choose one that she can afford.

It's not that hard.
