GOOD RIDDANCE: the H1 Hummer to be discontinued

Goodbye to gas-guzzling Hummer H1

DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- The 2006 model year will be the last for the Hummer H1, the hulking, gas-guzzling status symbol that has attracted celebrities and off-road enthusiasts but has drawn the ire of environmentalists.

General Motors Corp. announced plans Friday for the H1, which is the foundation for the automaker's Hummer brand.

Based on the military's Humvee, the about 12,000 put on the road since 1992 defined the Hummer name.

"It's a reflection of where we're going with the Hummer brand," Hummer general manager Martin Walsh said of the decision. "The Hummer DNA still resides in the Humvee. ... It will always be the core from where we come."

GM expects the last H1s to be built next month.

1. By the time they get to the H5, it will be made of blow-molded plastic
with a tiny engine made in China. But they will stick a chromey-looking grill on it for the sake of the broken-hearted rough-and-tough outdoor poseurs who can't afford 10 mpg.

Funny, just as I read this thread, the news started talking about it!

They said the Hummer H2 and H3 are less popular but smaller and a bit cheaper.

Personally I am happy GM made this decision. I'm sorry to say that uninformed Americans would still buy these things in droves if they continued to be available, which I find reprehensible due to the amount of gas these things suck up. But in reality, I am convinced Hummers are status-only cars, which I find stupid! "Look at me! I'm big and bad, and better than you in my Hummer H1!"
:eyes:

I'm glad about this, but I still want to see SUVs in general to cease production. They are gas hogs and we can live without them. And I still think gas prices would go down if production was in fact ceased for SUVs.

7. people got all upset over 12,000 hummers being sold?
Edited on Sat May-13-06 09:03 AM by madrchsod
i know they were a symbol of the decadent republicans and rappers but the two hummers around here are used for a road construction owner , the other guy uses his at his bison ranch. now the h2`s which are just plain stupid. the windows are so small there is no way anyone can safely see out of them. i guess that`s so one doesn`t have to look at what one hits

9. Around here there are dozens of Hummers
I live a mile from a sub division where the homes are one million or higher. The parade of Hummers and other expensive vehicles up and down our road is endless.

The primary drivers of the Hummers and other big SUV's are tiny women. What are they doing tooling around in the monsters? Running to the tanning salon and the mall.

10. Eh. Just 12,000 of these things around anyway.
Pretty much a rarity, and the H1 only existed to establish penis-extender credibility for the rest of the line.

I chuckle every time I see one of those H2 clown-wagons. What kind of a moron pays a $20K premium for a glorified Suburban?
