"Bush lied and a fish died..."
Edited on Sat May-13-06 07:46 AM by kentuck
Maher, last night.

He pointed out that the world record for a perch was 4 1/2 pounds before Bush caught his in his pond. He lied about the weight of his fish. From the looks of the fish, it appears he lied about what kind of fish it was also. The picture that I saw reported looked more like a small rock bass.

4. Do you by chance
have a link to that picture.

I'd love to see this infamous fish.

Did it look like this?

People call these fish Nile Perch but they really are Tilapia which can get pretty big.

7. There's no picture because Bush made it up
President George W. Bush told a German newspaper that his “best moment” during his first five years in office was catching a big fish in the lake on his Texas ranch.

"You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told the German weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked to name the high point of his presidency. "I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5-pound perch in my lake.”

With his approval ratings at an all-time low, a dismal environmental record, and a majority of Americans now disapproving of how he is handling everything from the war in Iraq to the economy to the nation’s energy crisis, maybe it’s no surprise the president found it difficult to identify a “best moment” that actually had anything to do with his first five years as leader of the free world.

Later reports revealed that the largest perch ever caught was 4.3 pounds, and that Bush probably was talking about a largemouth bass. Whether the president misspoke or the interviewer got it wrong is the subject of ongoing debate among Web bloggers and other observers.

6. "Strip GWB of his dignity--impeach him over the big LIE...
about the FISH!"

Doubled over, tears, now I'm !

I'd love to see that happen--and he can't squirm out of this lie!

9. Someone at the White House is already covering the lie, one day
last week a WH official corrected Chucklenuts and said it was a small mouth bass and not a perch. Once it was pointed out that a 7.5 lb perch was a world record they needed someone to clean up that day's lie. So Chucklenuts is just as inept at fishing in a man-made, stocked lake as he is in everything else.

I'm of the opinion that Bush never caught the fish - perch or small mouth bass - the secret service caught the fish (you don't let three-year olds play with sharp objects) and then Rove rushed Lord Bunnypants over for the photo op. Bushy is just so used to everyone doing everything for him catching a fish to pose with (and the fish looks like the smart one in the pic) is just an easy day at the office for the SS. Plus, I'm pretty sure a dead fish floating on the surface of the water could out fox Bush and not get caught. Bush lacks the motivation, concentration, intelligence, motor skills or patience to fish effectively - hence someone put that fish in his hands. That's my theory and I'm sticking by it.

13. Silly Rabbit
Hey, thanks for the memory. The "killer rabbit" that attacked poor old Jimmy was a truly hysterical moment in the Carter presidency. You can see a photo of it at:

11. Best Maher show ever. Richard Clark was outstanding
John Legend was a very pleasant surprise, Cornel West's commentary was powerful and entertaining as usual and Madeleine Albright was awesome.

John Gibson is so ridiculous that you have to laugh.

Great, great way to end the season.

12. Anyone know when he returns?
I was surprised to see it was his final show already, it's been less than three months I think.

I think he usually returns sometime around mid-August? Is that right?

14. The perch thing is quicky establishing itself as an urban legend
It is completely irrelevant what kind of fish it was. The Perch was the product of a double translation (Bushspeak->German->English) and is not necessarily what Bush said. In fact, judging from the quality of the German version, it was probably an error made by the GErman newspaper.
