MY FATHER TURNED!!!
My father, who was the only member of my immediate family to vote for Bush in '04.

My father, who helped me ruin this past Christmas for everyone by getting into a huge argument with me in which he DEFENDED torture and warrentless wiretaps (my favorite quote: "Imagine you're walking down the street, and you're attacked by four guys, and you have chemical weapons in your pocket. Wouldn't you do everything you can to save yourself?" :puke:)

My father, who told me that when he was "my age" he was young and idealistic, too. (I'm 38).

I've barely been able to speak to him for months (for a variety of reasons, not just political.)

But just now, HE approached ME and started making jokes about Bush!

HE WANTS HIM IMPEACHED!! He thinks he's worse than Nixon!!

OK, it's not a perfect situation. He hasn't really learned anything ("I like Nixon at first, too. And I didn't really like Reagan, but he turned out to be pretty good." :puke:) But the point is, he's made a 180 degree turn on Bush in less than 6 months, and he wanted to talk to his raging liberal son about it!!

:woohoo::party:

And now my related rant: Any Democrat who says that impeachment is off the table is completely out of touch with mainstream America.

I'm glad to hear it.

Unfortunately, hell will freeze over and the devil will be selling ice cream before my family gives up their Bush-love.

3. Thank you...this is important information.
Let's all talk (nicely, sensibly) with EVERYONE in the coming days.

I'll save ranting for DU...but I think we're hitting the tipping point!

I really appreciated your story, Finnfan...thanks.

5. A lot of folks over at FR are against Bush now also.
Edited on Fri May-12-06 11:09 PM by Harper_is_Bush
Wait until they get a leader who's not an idjit. Your dad, sorry to say, will be as he was on all those issues you've heard his opinions on before.

Bush is dead in the water...regarded as a fool even by many die-hard repubs. Your father hasn't "turned", he's just not an idiot.

8. This is (mostly) true
He still can't believe that Bush might be using the Surveillance programs to spy on political opponents (he thinks he's just incompetent). And when I mentioned that Connecticut has become a battleground over Lieberman, he mentioned that he likes Lieberman, except that he supported Bush.

My father values honesty, or what he perceives as honesty, above all else. Once Kerry was painted as a "flip-flopper", my father could never support him. He told me that he in the 2004 election he was deciding between Bush and Nader. Who else do you know who struggled with that decision?

I'm sure he would vote for McCain in 2008. But I'll worry about that then. For now, it's enough that he hates Bush.

27. Play "Let's Impeach the President" For Him
By Neil Young. It perfectly illustrates that *Bush* is a flip-flopper. Flip...flop.

10. It was.
I think he was making an attempt at bridging a lot of gaps in our relationship, not just the political ones. I don't forgive him for everything, but this is a start.

15. Forgiving isn't everything, Finnfan -
can't forgive my ex for a TON of stuff, but he now listens to me about politics.

I just remember he's my daughter's dad, and basically ok.

Always work on keeping parents close if you can. They don't last long enough.

7. Re: Impeachment "off the table"
Impeachement can't be off the table. However, we already know that the Repugs are going to use it as a hammer against the Dems for November.

So, saying that it's "off the table" just is meant to defuse the Repug attack machine.

Let them play their politics. I can't get too upset about Pelosi saying that. However, I did call her office and told them she's got a lot of people who see impeachment as inevitable very upset with her and that they could have found a better way to defuse the subject. E.G., They could have thrown it right back into the Repugs faces.

11. It is a hammer made of feathers.
Most of America supports impeachment. I'm convinced of it. If my father supports it, most of America does. The Democrats need to get their heads out of their butts and talk to the people. Pelosi is making a huge mistake right now.

I agree. My sister and bil voted twice for Bush. They are for impeachment
now. We nearly didn't speak again after the 2004 election. I'm not sure what turned them, and we don't agree on everything, but my bil said the other day that he wonders now if we can ever get the country back, because of the Bush administration's illegal activities. This time last year, I could never have imagined this happening. I have two other friends also who voted for Bush. They too have turned. I think it was Katrina and then, they began to think, and now see the war as a huge mistake.

So, if the Dems think the Repubs will gain any traction by 'accusing' them of wanting to impeach Bush, they are out of touch with the American people. I even saw a freeper say he hopes the Dems win in November, because the Repubs will never impeach Bush.

14. Impeachment has not been polled.
Too bad, that.

Pelosi made a faux pax, no doubt about it. But I don't see it as a huge one. The one thing that will not happen is the Repugs throwing it back into her face later when the inevitable happens and public demands that the judiciary committee approve articles. The Repugs will have no where to go then.

At any rate, Lincoln's "you can't fool all the people all the time" is ringing true right now. And Pelosi's mistake will not be remembered.

committed impeachable offenses he needs to be impeached. It's not optional!!

19. I'm glad you and your dad are mending fences
but I personally cannot get excited by anyone joining the anti-Bush club in 2006. Any time before that, then okay, they've redeemed themselves. But the people who are JUST NOW seeing Bush as a bad guy have two problems in my eyes:

1. They don't like him for the wrong reasons, such as immigration or his "failure to drown the government in a bathtub".

2. They're going to be duped by the next wave of Republican asshats who wear flannel shirts and lean on wooden objects (Bush's typical photo op pose from 2000).

"you might be surprised, but a lot of conservatives don't like bush and don't think he is conservative at all..." He also is worried about bushco - and thinks the tightly contested congressional race will go dem (and he thinks it is a good message both to bushco and to mitch daniels).

24. I agree - at 29% disapproval - a lot of people are pissed, & those
disgruntled Republicans (like your dad & mine) don't like pussyfootin' around. They want impeachment - They want to make Bush and his cronies pay. Many of these Republicans are a tough, honorable bunch and believe in "an eye for an eye" - They admire swift, tough consequences, and are waiting for someone to get the "balls" to make Bush accountable.

I think impeachment would be a VERY popular idea, and

I think this strategy needs to be looked at very carefully by the Democratic Party.

28. I don't think any Democrat/Liberal wants impeachment off the table........
...permanently. Rather, I think Democrats/Liberals realize we have one of two choices to get impeachment in the forefront of people's minds. Either, we wait for neocons/fundies to begin the process for us or we wait until we regain control of Congress first. In the meantime, we keep pounding away at people like your dad to bring them around to our way of thinking. I have a feeling this impeachment thing is going to ebb and flow but in the end people will demand it. It probably won't happen until at least January of 07 and possibly longer but it will happen.

has been turning it off in disgust, with a comment about how they keep harping on the "same damn crap." I think he's a little confused/disillusioned (& it's not due to his elderly status). It's because he's been a life long Republican, and someone's come along and hoodwinked him, and stole his party.

Edit to add: I doubt he gets any information from his computer.
