Alternative Freedom
Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:42 PM by RoyGBiv
For those who think copyrights, DRM, etc. are all about protecting "the little guy" or that they don't matter... Wake up to this now, or face a world where viewing those wonderful clips we're all so accustomed to seeing posted here that give us so much information is explicitly illegal. This is a "free speech" issue. Progressives should jump on it but aren't, for what reasons I cannot guess.

This is a Quicktime stream.

1. Invisible War on Culture (freedom)
As it says in their own title-- "invisible". Few have considered the implications--and as such, your post is very timely. We all need to be aware of the myriad efforts being made to control us and limit our freedoms.

3. Thanks ...

I don't know what it is, exactly. I think some people just don't see it because it's all so technical in nature. I think others have allowed themselves to be duped into believing, without even realizing it, that the corporate manner of distributing information, art, etc. is the way to go. But that's not all of it. Few passions are aroused by this issue, yet it's one of those issues we could directly address now *before* we've gone off the deep end. But, we don't. I wish I knew the answer.

P.S. A belated Welcome to DU!!! :hi:

I know you've been here several months, but apparently I haven't run across your posts, so I thought I'd welcome you now.

5. Thanks for the welcome. Started reading here on Nov. 3, 2004 though.
I really think that the rise of the internet and the potential end of "top down" information dissemination is why we are seeing such an ambitious onslaught by the "real" power brokers to reign things in. I believe net neutrality, DRM and e-voting are THE most important issues right now. The real dangers such as.. oh maybe ...ENVIRONMENTAL COLLAPSE cannot be addressed without these issues being won first.

4. Goddammit!!!!!
Since I am running on win98se I can't get quick time. I guess I'll have to wait till my son goes away for the weekend. I gave him my old comp which is running XP.

Coming back to your OP, I too wonder about the lack of discussions (news, warning, activism etc.)about protecting the neutrality of the WWW. And keeping it free ($)

The odds of preserving the Net (as it is) are extremely good. Don't forget we represent a multitude scattered around the world.

Many cyber travelers are concerned about it and are passing the word all over the place. It's not happening only in the US. I came across active members from :India, Europe, Japan, Irak, Iran etc.

They are not necessarily political activists but all are liberal and deeply committed to save the Net from being hijacked.

Peace
lise
