3. They don't do local though
However, you can get a cell phone with them (we have cell phone service, long distance and the Visa card) and use it to make all your calls. And 1% of what you spend goes to Progressive companies to help the cause. Once a month, you get to vote where the grant goes too, so you can actually chose which progressive companies you want to help.

4. I checked it out
They seem to be clean. More digging wouldn't hurt.

Here's a link about their association with ACLU.

2. Well I live in a town of 3500 and our phone company is independent
we're too small for the big boys to give a shit about. But they pretty much just cover our town and the one up the road 10 miles.

5. BellNSA...
Independent of citizen's control, indeed, independent even from U.S. laws (and immune from the U.S. Department of Justice), Congressional oversight, and the will of the People. Of course, it is dependent upon the Bush Administration who act as their Commander in Chief/CEO.

7. We have a rural co-op that is pretty darned cool
But at some point, our calls go over other companies' tranmission lines or microwave relays... seems likely you are screwed no matter who you have service with.

8. My high school was in a village w/ an independent company
They were non profit but did quite well so they ended up offering things like high speed internet before anyone else. The pay phones were also still a dime in the mid 90's. I personally knew the manager of the company.
