16. Another $$$ grubbing shill...
I flipped through his new book to remind myself why people like him deserve a stunning punch in the junk, and came across this gem:

Myth: The President and Congress control the country
Reality: The people control the country

Yeah, asshat, in a Democracy people can vote. You're Captain freakin' Obvious. After that, the only power "the people" have over their representatives is a strongly worded letter or a multimillion dollar lobby. Which weapon do most of "the people" have? Which one is actually effective?

That hypocrite should trade his shovel for a bedpan.

46. There is no such thing as gouging
Gouging (as an idea) only comes up after many years of collusion between Government and Companies. Government doesn't care if poor people are going to have to choose between gas/oil and food/medicine. If they did they would have ensured America didn't become a Car driven state post WWII.

Bureaucrats are only proposing ridiculous things like $100 dollar rebates (monies stolen form you in the first place) now because enough plebes have begun to shout and make noises about possibly voting out the entrenched politicians.

And while I personally have drastically altered my driving patterns, high oil prices should stimulate alt-fuels, alt-vehicles and more efficient systems, which could have been in place many years ago.

Also as I pointed out in post #42, I think many of the posts fall into the classic trap of "If someone disagrees with my political or sociological points of view I must categorize them as Morally unfit as well."

34. He's become noticeably more partisan since Bush
was installed as President. Pre-Bush I remember him as a consumer reporter of sorts. It's just more evidence how aligned his corporate masters are with the right wing. Assumedly he was muzzled somewhat in years past but under Bush he has found his voice. Yuck.

43. Here's a quick list
I think he's correct about the free market. Free Markets do tend to regulate themselves (the Oil Companies are NOT a test case for the Free Market because they have been in collusion with Government for years to stifle alt-fuels and more efficient vehicles which exist in abundance in other nations).

In his book Give me a Break pg. 136 he was critical of the National Flood Insurance Program and the way Rich people who live on awesome (including Stossel) beach front property. We saw how well Big Daddy take your Money did for the people of NO...

I think he is right about the current climate of litigation in the US today. Lawyers sue and sue until they win. And the lawyers take the majority of the winning. Peter Angelos made huge sums of money from the Asbestos lawsuits, enough to purchase the O's in 1993.

I agree with him that less government is better. IMO, No government is best!

I agree with him on personal freedom in regards to one's own body. Smoke, drink do drugs don't wear a seatbelt go ahead do it.

This leads to an aside argument, which I will state very shortly, If a person rides a motorcycle and gets severly injured, does not have medical insurance and ends up being covered by federal funds has he effectively stolen X amount of money from you (i.e. your tax dollars to help him)? This is not a Stossel argument, but a conundrum of my own thinking.

I think he was unfairly criticized when he did the 20/20 special "Boys and Girls Are Different. I think Men and Women are different, note not inferior/superior just different. Although any individual is going to have a 100% chance of being against type either way...

I think many of the posts fall into the classic trap of "If someone disagrees with my political or sociological points of view I must categorize them as Morally unfit as well."

40. I remember his sickening commentary during Katrina.
http://mediamatters.org/items/200509080021

From Stossel's September 7 column:

Consider this scenario: You are thirsty -- worried that your baby is going to become dehydrated. You find a store that's open, and the storeowner thinks it's immoral to take advantage of your distress, so he won't charge you a dime more than he charged last week. But you can't buy water from him. It's sold out.

You continue on your quest, and finally find that dreaded monster, the price gouger. He offers a bottle of water that cost $1 last week at an "outrageous" price -- say $20. You pay it to survive the disaster.

You resent the price gouger. But if he hadn't demanded $20, he'd have been out of water. It was the price gouger's "exploitation" that saved your child.

It saved her because people look out for their own interests. Before you got to the water seller, other people did. At $1 a bottle, they stocked up. At $20 a bottle, they bought more cautiously. By charging $20, the price gouger makes sure his water goes to those who really need it.

The people the softheaded politicians think are cruelest are doing the most to help. Assuming the demand for bottled water was going to go up, they bought a lot of it, planning to resell it at a steep profit. If they hadn't done that, that water would not have been available for the people who need it the most.

<...>

It's the price "gougers" who bring the water, ship the gasoline, fix the roof, and rebuild the cities. The price "gougers" save lives.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Yeah, because someone who had a thirsty baby and didn't have any money clearly didn't want the child to get water. :eyes: :puke:
