2. Well she went out on patrol...
with a group in Ramadi. They basically knew they were going to walk into an ambush and did, a marine was shot right in front of her, and in the middle of a firefight she's doing a stand-up (talking to the camera) with bullets whizzing by her dome. It was crazy.

This term "balls" has evolved into a gender neutral word despite a few folks who get all upset that society dare use it. Sorry, I love it!

6. Lara Logan's reporting from Ramadi has been exemplary this week
She's one of the few journalists (along with the Knight-Ridder crew over there, who have been excellent) really making a name for herself through this war. While I was disappointed in her participation in the Tal Afar dog-and-pony show, her reporting from Ramadi has redeemed her. She has the potential to be a Halberstam, a Sheehan, dare I say a Dan Rather, for this war.

9. If she survives it.
She has clearly been in the line of fire this week. I'm not entirely sure how much WE gain in perspective by her putting herself and her cameraman in harms way. And I'm not sure if their presence is good or bad for our soldiers or the Iraqis.

But no one can accuse her of phoning it in.

15. There is no denying the fact that...
Ms. Logan has certainly been blessed in the looks department. That said, she has avoided the trap of being yet another NewsModel, instead using her brains and her tenacity to transcend both the blessings and the pitfalls of her obvious attractiveness.

How is that, DU Grrrls? Did I do good, or should I expect the kick in the goolies? ;-)

There's nothing wrong with being attractive as long as you don't "use people."

I'm very impressed with Logan's quality (and live!) reporting. Further, I'm a humble enough of a heterosexual woman to agree with you, "She's the complete package." ---> She IS beautiful and real.

Bless her and may she stay unharmed and her personality remain unchanged. Although I know that she's aware that others consider her attractive (hot), she has not become arrogant and is real to the point of not doing that "flirting fandango" so many of our women news models sink to. Ewe! :P

Yes, she's got it all and that's great!
More power to her for keeping real. :hi:

26. Can we all agree she's demonstrated what courageous journalism can be?
Bob Woodruff was another attractive young person who attempted to show reality in Iraq, and he was not so fortunate as Ms. Logan, who I must note has been in Iraq for quite some considerable time, not just a week or two.

As a daily CBS Evening News viewer, I forgive Jack Dawson if he appreciates Lara Logan's natural appeal. CBS Evening News does its best to show its younger female reporters in tight (if modest) tops, and usually films them in 1/4 front poses to accentuate their torsos. I notice Gloria Borger doesn't deliver White House reports in tight sweaters.

None of this diminishes the outstanding journalism Ms. Logan has been sending back for us to absorb this week. No other network is showing us this sort of footage. None of this side-chatter about physical appeal diminishes Jack Dawson's original appreciation aimed at Ms. Logan's courage, not her sexual organs. He started the thread to compliment Ms. Logan's character, not to face PC nitpicking.

28. Oh, get over it
I agree with everything you said, except the PC nitpicking. Remember, to "Jew one down" and to "nigger rig a device" were also once "figures of speech" - that is, until those awful PC nitpickers kept nitpicking so people would stop saying such stupid things. The same goes for equating courage with maleness; since there is clearly no natural connection between the attributes of courage and the testicles, one would have to ask how and why this equation occurs at all. What is its genealogy? What does it say about how we organize our concepts as a society? Because the power relations of a society are embedded in the language. Figures of speech are not innocent, and yes, it hurts us to think that we are reproducing these power relationships without intention (since we raise intention to the holiest of holies) but you don't get to choose out of the language: you didn't make it, nor can you control it. Oh, I'm overthinking it, I know. But the problem is that too many people underthink it, and then try to hide behind that ignorance as an excuse for participating in stupidities.

29. Thank you for so ably demonstrating my intention.
And then projecting my disgust for this entire interchange back at me with a childish "Oh, get over it."

Traditionally on DU, someone tries to make some point, and then that effort is drowned in "trees-for-the-forest" thread distractors who make zero effort to appreciate the original point of the thread.

In this case, Jack Dawson is trying to make a point and others have spread distractions ignoring Ms. Logan's attractiveness, heroism, intelligence, and personal courage...

Now exactly who was acting in a sexist manner?

PC Nitpickers, that's who. More interested in protecting some imaginary person than reaffirming an actual person.

"How can people be so heartless, how can people be so cruel?
Easy to be hard, easy to say no...
Especially people who care about strangers, who care about evil, and social injustice,
do you only care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needing friend? I need a friend..."

30. Your only problem there is my post #6
One can do both at once, you know?

It would have been possible for Jack to do BOTH praise Ms. Logan AND (GASP!) not use a silly sexist expression, you know?

Your only seeming intention is this: you want to stilkl be able to use stupid sexist expressions because you're used to them and you like them and you don't want to think about the complicity between language and power.

31. Now I'm accused of using "stupid sexist expressions"
Edited on Sat May-13-06 09:08 AM by BusterD
I've used none. Racial epithets and obscene language have been used by you. Users have been accused of sexism and racism with very little evidence to support such a position. I've done none of that.

Some chose to make personal attacks instead of sticking to the thread subject (again making my point for me). At least no one is discussing spelling errors... stuff that's really relevant.

Look at ME folks! I'm ANGRY on a CHAT board! Look at MY personal courage! I ADD something MEANINGFUL to the discussion!

Yes, Jack Dawson, CBS Evening News has been trying to improve the quality level of tv news on their network. Unfortunately, little can be done about the maturity level of discussion on this board.

We'll see what happens when the tv talk show host takes over.

32. Whether you've used them is irrelevant
You're defending them.

As for my use of "obscenities and racial epithts," I see no problem with the first, and the second was used in indirect discourse. Pretty hard to talk about racism without citing actual racism, you know?

Finally, I'm not accusing anyone of bing sexist. I'm saying that the expressions are sexist, whether we like it or not. It has nothing to do with the person, and that's the point of focusing on the language.

36. "Ms. Logan AND (GASP!) not use a silly sexist expression"
Edited on Sat May-13-06 09:44 AM by ShortnFiery
I'm not into the term "hot" when referring to the sexual appeal of either men or women.

HOWEVER, and this is real important, "Neither you nor I can control the language that society uses." Further, I submit that you "bring into" these words your own negative connotations that are NOT adopted by those who consider using the word "hot" appropriate.

I love to use the term "big balls" but that doesn't make THE TERM as I choose to use it "sexist." Realize, that is YOUR INTERPRETATION. IMO, the word has evolved to be considered gender neutral.

Really, how many threads do you need to start and/or beat down others tangentially => TO REALIZE you will not get your way on this issue?

Please adjust and disconnect because other people are not going to stop using "hot" and "balls" just because you tell them it is wrong.

We're all on the same side here.

This petty bickering makes us all look small.

Let's all walk-the-walk of tolerance?

38. Well, I know you will & we will still love (and reference) "Big Balls" :-)
Well I'm rather upper class high society
God's gift to ballroom notoriety
And I always fill my ballroom
The event is never small
The social pages say I've got
The biggest balls of all

I've got big balls
I've got big balls
They're such big balls
And they're dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

And my balls are always bouncing
My ballroom always full
And everybody comes and comes again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
Great balls of fire

I've got big balls
Oh I've got big balls
And they're such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night

(oh) We've got big balls
We've got big balls
We've got big balls
Dirty big balls
He's got big balls
She's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

(oh we've got big balls, we've got big balls...)
And I'm just itching to tell you about them
Oh we have such wonderful fun
Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish... (but we've got the biggest balls of them all)

Complements = Lyrics by AC/DC
