With all the crap going on today involving NSA spying, media on the prowl for Rove on Friday, tax cuts, Iran, etc., this one just started me laughing. I know, I know, Katrina was not funny at all, but all of a sudden, just when things could not be worse for Bush, out of no where, FEMA, an agency with no one in control of it, just decides to make a totally ridiculous claim in the midst of all the turmoil.

It's like the Mad Hatter has taken control.

5. Fuck FEMA

I live in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. It's one town east of what used to be Biloxi. Everything is still in upheaval, and nobody's been doing a damn thing. The city councils are too damn busy fighting over budgets, and unemployment is still up there like the Great Depression. The biggest fights at this point are over insurance companies ripping people off, and now we hear stories of how billions of dollars of taxpayer dollars devoted to relief efforts and rubble removal were simply wasted due to incompetence if not outright fraud. It's like the reconstruction effort in Baghdad!

At this point, I'm of a mind to advocate that if you live in a coastal community, you're almost better off begging the city council of your city to form an independent plan to get out the needy and the poor when the storm comes. Don't sit around and wait for FEMA to do it for you; organize directly because it seems they won't come to help you. The days of depending on a corrupt, abusive, incompetent government simply cannot continue forever. It seems the only people we have left to depend upon is each other.

Until the government is reformed, you'd best consider yourself on your own with only fellow neighbors to depend upon unless you want a repeat of the disaster at the Superdome because all the poor folks were left behind.

7. They're disgusting, the whole lot of them!
I think you have the right idea, Selatius -- make plans to help each other, because this corrupt, inept government sure isn't something one can depend on.

9. Things always work best at a local level.
On any emergency situation it is and has always been the local Emergency Management authorities to be the first responders. Nagin failed badly getting his people evacuated. FEMA screwed up later getting aid to help out the locals.
