There are 4 categories of Freepers/conservatives in reaction to the low Bush approval ratings. Allow me to summarize:
1. The Deniers These are the people who plug their ears to it all, and as far as they are concerned it's just a big liberal media conspiracy. They're even mad at Fox News because Fox can't cover it up any more. These people still insist that George W. Bush is a "popular wartime president". They very much still live in an October, 2001 world.
2. The Excusemakers These are the people who will grudgingly acknowledge that Bush is down in the polls, but blame it all on media ("they only report the bad things from Iraq! Waaaaa!!!"), or a series of unfortunate bad luck, or a series of good faith mistakes from the Bush White House. Or Bush just isn't "getting his message out".
3. The Bush Idolizers These people freely admit that Bush is down in the polls, and they are even proud of it. Why? Well because Bush is a courageous, resolute leader who says what he means and means what he says, even if he's wrong, and even if the American people hate what he is doing. Uh huh. Hitler, Stalin and Mao also had convictions and principles, and they stood by them through thick or thin. These people will often compare Bush to Churchill, or Truman, or Lincoln.
4. The Fatalists Many of these folks are truly angry at Bush for some betrayal of the conservative faith (spending, the Medicare drug bill, immigration, Harriet Miers, etc.). Their attitude is that the Bush team is reaping what it sows, that Bush is getting what he deserves with the low approval ratings for betraying his base. These people are getting bolder and more open in their criticisms of Bush as his lame duckerry increases by the day.
