AMERICAblog: Verizon Says Not One of the Companies Involved

Verizon Wireless says not involved in today's domestic spy scandal - what about other phone companies?
by John in DC - 5/11/2006 01:11:00 PM

I just spoke with the spokesman for Verizon Wireless, Jeffrey Nelson, and he told me, flat out: "Verizon Wireless is not involved in this situation." It was clear to me that he meant they are not one of the carriers involved in turning phone records over to the Bush administration, as reported in today's USA Today.

(By the way, there are a few news stories out there claiming Verizon Wireless IS involved in today's scandal - I'm told those stories are in error.)

Putting aside the question of whether this is true - I know the spokesman and trust him, though maybe he's being lied to by his superiors - this now puts on the onus on Cingular, Sprint, and all the other wireless companies, AND all the other landline companies like Verizon, Cingular, etc. to fess up. Did they or did they not turn over our private phone records to the Bush administration?

4. I have a friend who works at Verizon Wireless.
I can't say for sure one way or the other, but I do know that, internally, one of their big issues is NOT releasing any of their data to anyone, even to government agencies.

5. They're losing business today big time
And they were already hurting on the market with their less than impressive earnings reports anyway. This is damage control.

8. I just e-mailed Vonage
"In light of recent revelations that several landline phone companies are partnering with tne U.S. National Security Agency in conducting warrantless phone surveillance--and that only one wireless phone company has publicly denied it--I would like to know Vonage's stand on the issue."
