Phone company advice needed.
I now have an unlimited long distance plan with AT&T. I would like to dump them, but I need a low cost long distance unlimited calling plan as I need to call across the country to speak to any of my relatives. Suggestions please.

1. Check out Qwest & Working Assets...
Qwest doesn't have service in my company. I am with Working Assets and I like them.

:hi:

3. I have an MCI calling card for my calls
2.8 cents a minute. I don't know if they are guilty. I asked them about it though about a week ago. They said all they can tell anyone is that any call placed with this card is from xyz phone # and that is it - not to who.

6. Have you thought about voice over IP?
Check out vonage:

http://www.vonage.com

$24.95 a month for unlimited long distance anywhere in the US, and you can keep your number. We're switching to them from Verizon because of the NSA crap. That and they are tons cheaper!

9. I've been using an online prepaid service "OneSuite" for 3+ yrs.
I've had no problems with it, and calls in the US are 2.5 cents a min. I call my son in Sicily for 3.6 cents a min! All you do is set up an account and deposit some $$ via your credit card. I think the min. is $10. You call a local number for you, and then enter the number you want to call, that's it! You can set it up to announce how much $$ you have remaining in your account before you place any more calls, and when it gets low, you can recharge it online.

Here's a link if you're interrested.

10. VOIP
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:26 PM by tinrobot
I have Speakeasy for my DSL, which allows me to bypass the phone company. Most DSL connections require a wired phone, Speakeasy doesn't.

I then have a VOIP line, which gives me unlimited local and long distance for $20/month. I use Packet 8, but there's a ton of them.

11. VONAGE is $24.95 a month
BellSouth blocked them from giving local numbers so I had to spend $5. more a month for inbound 800. My total bill, including the fastest cable service Comcast offers is UNDER $80. per month, including taxes.

Vonage is clearer than Bell or AT&T and works seamlessly, while offering FULL services (call-waiting, etc.}

I also have free calling to all over the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

12. What is their position on with NSA?
So far AT&T, Bellsouth, and Verizon have identified as cooperating with the spying program. What about these other companies? How do we know?

14. they're so new they have no position I know about.
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:42 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
all I know is if everyone used Vonage, it would seriously hurt mega-corps like AT&T and Bell. I also doubt if standard spying software works well on those services. The Govt. likely didn't even ask Vonage for it's meager records, since it can't follow up on them with regular existing equipment like Predator.

here's a list of companies where I no longer trade; AT&T, BellSouth, WallMart and last but not least EXXON.

13. I have started to try this one
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:35 PM by rumpel
www.skype.com

It is free to talk to someone, who has the same software on their computer, anywhere in the world. They also provide low cost connection to regular phone lines - but I have not done so.
I can see when my friends and associates are available, not available or even online. So I will not disturb them at an inconvenient time.

I wonder what happens when net phones connect to a landline...

on edit: currently there are 5,808,163 people on Skype around the world (awake and connected)
