hereIf you’re not afraid of these people yet, I suggest you have not been paying enough attention.
What’s to stop the regime in power, whoever it might be, from using this information against its perceived political enemies? As I keep telling the right-wing crazies who write to me, whatever power they grant to George Bush will be available to Hillary Clinton when she becomes president. Not that I’m supporting Hillary for president, but it makes their neck veins bulge because they hate her so much. But this is exactly how we should all look at incursions of government power: If we don’t want that power in the hands of people we don’t like, then we’d better not put that power in the hands of people we do like.
And then there’s the matter of all the “privatizing” going on. To the Bushistas, privatization means giving away to their buddies whatever hasn’t been nailed down, and even some things that have. What kind of business advantage could someone obtain if he was able to snoop around in his rivals’ phone records?
