My candidate for 2008
We as a species are at a crossroads. We either heed the impending crisis or we will not be here or any generation in the future. I appreciate all that support ROE and Gay marriage issues. I stand firm in both courts BUT this is not the time to be a single issue voter.
While I was petitioning, prior to 2004, I past MCCC church that was letting out of Sunday services. I asked a gay couple to sign my petition, which they both did. I asked "So,who are you supporting in November"? One said, "Kerry".I asked the other partner. He said "Bush". I asked "How can you do that? he said " My parents are multi-millionaires, I have no choice". I said, "As long as you know you will be spending those millions in the closet, go for it!"
The point of my story is there will be no 'tomorrows' if we don't deal with global warming, Peak oil and water & food shortages due to this crisis. I will support any candidate, from any party, that TELLS THE TRUTH. I am 56, have no children, and will be OK until I die. Most of you do. IF you really care about the next generations there are now issues that are greater than ROE or Gay marriage.I've drawn my line in the sand.

quote....
The amount of water in the world is finite. The number of us is growing fast and our water use is growing even faster.

A third of the world's population lives in water-stressed countries now. By 2025, this is expected to rise to two-thirds.

There is more than enough water available, in total, for everyone's basic needs

1. Population control...
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:20 AM by Triana
...unless we address that, dealing with peak oil, global warming, and water and food shortages will have limited effect. Not saying we shouldn't address peak oil, warming, and water and food issues but it HAS to be done in combination with sensible population control. That means birth control and reproductive choice and education. Have you EVER heard anyone in the US society talk about how it's OK NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN? Or, encouraging people to have smaller families? Nope...not a peep.

It is IMMORAL and stupid to belive that we can continue to have unlimited population growth on a planet with limited resources. The consequences will be disasterous. Failure to address this is immoral in and of itself -- much more so than birth control or family planning. The fundies, as always, are gagged by their own dogma and can't grok logic or common sense on such matters. They can't see the larger picture because they're blinded by their own dogma. We'll all pay for it - or our future generations will, at least.

2. 100% agree with you
Unfortunately, dealing with the Catholic Church in 3rd world countries is like hitting your head against the wall. IF they weren't willing to respond to the AIDS epidemic in the last 25 years the chances of us changing this is nil. Unfortunately, due to global warming, peak oil and water & food supplies they die off very quickly. Many in the Peak Oil camp believe that we will lose 1/3 of the world's population. NO ONE can live without water. it has been a crisis for years in 3rd world countries and getting worse.

3. I think water is the next thing....
...that will be privatized. Water will be the new oil. It will be a commodity that some cannot afford and they will die. It's the next resource the US and multinationals will be invading and occupying countries to get their hands on and profit from.

I can't be happier that I'll only be here another 30 years or so. *shudder*
