1. Why the contempt for the phrase?
What do you think it means?

2. please explain further

As I understand the concept, the term is perfect. Telco companies wish to charge users more for the broadband connections they're already paying for. They also want to charge content providers like Google for using the pipes American citizens paid for with our tax dollars. This is greed, plain and simple.

3. I agree
I also don’t understand the “end of days” rhetoric coming from the net neutrality side. The idea that the Internet as we know it will disappear if it isn't regulated is simply unfounded.

I am part of the Hands Off the Internet coalition, http://handsoff.org/ , that opposes net neutrality legislation and I would be happy to share information with anyone or discuss this further.

For those of you interested, here is an informative blog entry regarding the debate over "net neutrality" written by a Microsoft employee, John Carroll. There is much confusion over this issue, not to mention the hyperbole, which this article helps clarify. http://blogs.zdnet.com/carroll/?p=1563

4. Hmmm...
If I recall correctly, the old term was "common carrier." I assume it came from the transportation industry originally, where it meant that the vendor was required to treat all ticketholders equally, at least in terms of getting them to their destination (first class still gets more comfortable seats and better lunches, but BFD). There was equivalent language in telecommunications law, requiring non-discriminatory treatment of packets on the web, that somehow got cancelled during the cuckoo bananas regime-- probably some midnight conference committee fiddle-- which is why the issue needs to be revisited now.

But it's just so *common,* isn't it, Muffy? The wrong slant for the Ownership Society?

I confess I don't see what you're objecting to. I like net neutrality as a term.
