Bush/Enzi Bill Would Jeopardize Access to Contraception and Hinder Efforts to Reduce Abortions, Say Reid and Clinton
Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at 11 a.m., Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will hold a press conference to discuss the effects of the Bush/Enzi Bill on access to contraception and abortion prevention efforts.
The United States has the highest rate of unintended pregnancies among all industrialized nations. Half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, and almost half of these end in abortion. Most of these unintended pregnancies- and the resulting abortions-can be prevented if we eliminate the barriers that prevent women from having access to affordable and effective contraception. However, the Bush/Enzi bill that is being considered by the U.S. Senate would actually jeopardize access to affordable and effective contraception for many women. Senators Reid and Clinton are cosponsors of comprehensive legislation, the Prevention First Act, aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies, preventing abortions and improving women's health.
Bill Nelson (D-FL) is on the floor of the Senate right now discussing it (C-Span2 - 10:38 a.m.) Reid already spoke on it there. I will look for who is going to cover it.
