Either way you cut it, CAP doesn't make Alito look good
I was just thinking a few minutes ago that either way you cut it, CAP doesn't make Alito look good.

If he joined that organization knowing full well what they were about, of course that begs the question of whether he is a bigot.

But let's just, for argument's sake, take Alito at his word that he DIDN'T know what they were about. And if he had read certain documents of their's, he would not have joined.

Even if that IS the case, Alito still looks bad, because that means he joined an organization that he knew nothing about, and didn't bother to research on. It calls into question his common sense, his intelligence and his intellect.

So either way, he looks bad.

1. #3: He knew, he remembers, he lied and continues to. That
seems more likely to me.

7. I totally agree with you....I absolutely think he remembers and knows
full well about his association with CAP. Which is why he touted his association w/ them to the Reaganites when he was applying for a job in Reagan's administration.

But now he has to cover up his association with them.

I posted about this on my blog today: http://progressiveminds.bloghi.com/2006/01/11/republicans-aren-t-truly-proud-of-their-conservative-philosophy.html

to the Reagan administration? If he didn't know it was on there, or if he didn't remember belonging to it, how did it get on there?

He's either lying now, or he was lying then.

20. Patsy Stone, what a GREAT point! That's the first I even thought
about Alito lying in his prior life! For us they're little lies, for Alito? Not so much. Sorry, but he picked this career, you have to be pure as the driven snow at this point, or have a wonderful team to cover for you. :eyes:I hope it won't work this time. :toast:

6. From the NYT:
"The question for senators to consider and to ask is why Samuel Alito would brag about his membership in an organization known for its fervent hostility to the inclusion of women and minorities at Princeton," said Ralph G. Neas, president of People for the American Way.

Yeah, it looks bad....let's just hope that this will help bring him down.....

9. Extremely easy answer!
He bragged about it on his job application, because he was trying to prove his conservative credentials to the Reaganites. He was in effect telling them "I am one of you."

with Harriet Meyers....the "I'm one of you..wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean?" and it didn't work for her.....but he's stance on job application admissions as being only that, job application suck ups, shows that he CAN not be trusted either way.

11. Also, if he did know what they were about and
was not active, but put it on his resume because he knew it would influence his being considered for a job, it speaks to his character. He pretended to be a member of a group merely to gain favor which makes him dishonest...a poser, if you will. Any angle you take on this issue is unattractive to say the least. I think the guy has a hood and sheet hidden somewhere.

15. That seemed to be the thing that stuck out in the hearings today.
And I applaud Sen. Kennedy LOUDLY for raising hell with Arlen "Dried Out N' Dead" Specter. The news organizations that weren't giving Scalito head were talking about CAP, which I think is one of the biggest stains on him right now.

16. I am having just a bit of trouble connecting the dots
he graduated from Princeton in '72. He claims that he was a member of this group in '85 on a job application. Now, he can't remember being a member at all.

So, he rfemembers an association that he had 13 years previous when he fills out a job application. Twenty years after that, he can't remember that he was a member at all? Has he ever said that he DID'NT list that association on that application? Was this the type of association that required or requested monetary support from the alumni? Hows much money did he contribute? If it's not the type that needs money, what was required of him? Were they just allowed to use his name in exchange for access to claiming that he was a member? What did the association get out of the deal? Access to the WH? Who eles was a member of this association during the 13 years that he MIGHT have remembered being associated with them? Who conducted his interview at the WH that would have been impressed with that addition? There are lots of alumni from those 13 years. Perhaps someone familar with, but not directly involved with this group, has a better memory than he does of that time span?

He obviously has a memory that can hold a memory for 13 years. He proved that when he added that association to that job application. Why was it then that he couldn't remember, for a period of 12 years, that he promised to recuse himself from cases where he MIGHT have an interest in the outcome?

21. "I was once a member of the Klan..."
"They said they were for morals and purity... I never participated in any activities. I really don't remember anything about it, and I'm sure that if I knew what they were really about I never would have joined. Yes, I did put on my application to work for Strom Thurmond but I was applying for a political position at the time... Though I may have made larger contributions to various charitable organizations I wouldn't have listed them because it was an application for a political position and relevance... blah... blah... blah..."

Pure unadulterated bullcrap... put on yer boots boys and girls.
