Evidence against terror accused 'extracted by torture'

THE government's arguments in a crucial terror case are based on evidence extracted under torture, a court heard yesterday.

The legal team for Abu Qatada, accused of being an international terrorist, claimed the new Home Secretary, John Reid, was using evidence obtained from a man repeatedly tortured by United States officials in a prison in Afghanistan. snip

Edward Fitzgerald QC, Qatada's barrister, told SIAC: "The appellant strongly suspects that the national security case against him is based on material obtained as a result of torture."

Mr Fitzgerald cited another lawyer as saying a terror suspect was tortured in Afghanistan to provide the information.
