31% - NYT/CBS Poll
Edited on Tue May-09-06 06:30 PM by kpete
31% President Bush’s approval rating in the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, another new low and “the third lowest approval rating of any president in 50 years.” The percentage who say going to war in Iraq was the correct decision “slipped to a new low of 39 percent, down from 47 percent in January.”
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/05/09/31-2/#comments

Mr. Bush's overall job approval rating hit another new low, 31 percent, tying the low point of his father, George H. W. Bush, in July 1992, four months before the elder Mr. Bush lost his bid for a second term to Bill Clinton. That is the third lowest approval rating of any president in 50 years; only Richard M. Nixon and Jimmy Carter were viewed less favorably.

Mr. Bush is even losing support in what has been his base: 51 percent of conservatives and 69 percent of Republicans now approve of the way Mr. Bush is handling his job. In both cases, those figures represent a substantial drop in support from four months ago.

3. Two polls showing 31%.
That's good. We're in the twenties with the margin of error.

Expect polls showing in the twenties within days.

7. If Rove gets indicted...
I bet the next round of polls will be like 29-30%...

Then, if gas prices go up a bit more for Memorial Day & then "summer driving season", we could see a bit more poll shrinkage... 27-28%

More bad news over the summer out of Iraq or more sabre rattling over Iran... and, we may be getting down to Cheneyesque numbers.

9. I'm betting 28-29% regardless of indictments.
Should lower that much just on current news alone.

5. He is without a doubt
the worst president in American history. The damage done to our country, and to the rest of the world cannot be exaggerated. There have been corrupt administrations before, but none has done as much as Bush to cause enormous pain to so many people. His approval rating should be in the minus range.

8. Carter hit 28%, Poppy Bush was at 29%...

The all-time worst numbers belong to Harry Truman (23%), who also holds the record for the biggest range in approval rating. George H. W. Bush eventually sank to 29%. Carter hit 28%, and Nixon was at 24% before he resigned. For a great survey of approval ratings and how they can affect elections...

For all his warts, McArthur was a legendary general from World War 2.
