Specter Stonewalls on Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) Docs
Just now, Sen. Kennedy requested that Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter issue a subpoena to the Library of Congress for documents related to the right-wing group Concerned Alumni of Princeton, of which Alito was a member. The documents contain “clipping files, background information, correspondence and memoranda, financial records, fund-raising material, lists of supporters, minutes of meetings, issues and other items.” The documents are critical because Alito now claims he can’t remember anything about his involvement with the group.

Specter refused to rule on the request, claiming it’s the first time the request had even been made. Actually, Sen. Kennedy sent a letter on December 22 making the request:

It is likely that a formal request for access directly from you on behalf of the Committee would be received with more cooperation than the CRS has received so far, and we urge you to make such a request as soon as possible.

The letter was also reported widely by the Associated Press.

When Kennedy noted that he had sent the letter, Specter replied that there is a big difference between “sending” a letter and someone “receiving” it. He then banged his gavel loudly.

Sen. Kennedy just introduced Specter’s reply to his December 22 letter into the record. So there is proof that Specter did get the letter.

2. Old News...
Happened earlier today.... BEFORE Martha cried.

They got it "ironed" out, the documents are "supposed" to be coming. Tomorrow may be another thing though.

I've lost ALL trust in almost everything these days!

9. The issue is he should have gotten them to begin with. He REQUESTED them

and it was clear from today that Spector was avoiding giving Kennedy, and likewise Americans at large, the papers and the information that was requested.

Question is, will we get all the information or has that information be shredded at this point?

Who knows?

10. Don't you think it could have been an honest mistake,
especially from Specter? I know he's a repug, but he's not one I tend to villify usually. He did
explain the request was submitted during the holidays and he hadn't heard of it.
He is the one guy on the fence, I thought, and I don't think he's trying to throw a
wrench in the works. The fact that he's making them available is more than we got
from this admin during the Bolton fiasco.
Oh, the drama! :)

14. I think the point is Senator Kennedy had to ask for them in front of
the cameras because otherwise Mr. Arlen "Magic bullet" Spector was apparently less than willing to offer them up.

16. Possibly, but Specter was absolutely emphatic about it. Nasty, too.
He wouldn't even investigate the possibility. No, I'm going to go with "liar" this time.
