Senate: No permanent bases in Iraq
"Despite all of the division and the partisanship about when to leave Iraq and under what circumstances, I think there is one thing that everyone ought to be able to agree on, namely that we should not be in Iraq permanently," Lee said in a statement issued Wednesday. "As long as we keep the door to a permanent military presence open, we will continue to fuel the insurgency, undermine the security situation and keep the targets on our troops' backs."

They're building the bases, and the permanent fortified embassy-- the largest in the world and the center of a fortified compound in Baghdad. Iraq is meant to be the central garrison of a U.S. imperial presence on the Middle East. Congress appropriates the money.

3. I'd bet the embassy is never occupied by Americans
It'll either be abandoned because it's too dangerous or destroyed before move in day.

4. No, it will stay
and we will be there until the last drop of oil is extracted. Regardless of the cost in terms of life.

There will be some excuse for our soldiers to stay there for decades if the American public does not demand otherwise.

7. We'll try, but I don't think the Iraqis are going to stand for it
To them it's just George Bush's palace. It's a gigantic target in the middle of nowhere.

9. Those bases will be temporary.
How long temporary is depends on definition of the word.

10. Define permanent..
Permanent in the sense of "a thousand years"? or permanent in the sense of "100 years"?
Permanent in the sense of a daily 'poke in the eye' to every living Iraqi for a decade?
