Chemicals in children's vinyl lunchboxes?
Anyone hear anything about this?

My local news is going to do a story tomorrow night on chemicals in lunchboxes...
http://www.kcra.com/index.html They have a teaser video when you first go to their site

I did a search and found this about lead in lunchboxes...

What Ecology is doing about lead-containing lunchboxes
What Ecology is doing:

Recent reports of high lead levels in certain soft vinyl lunchboxes manufactured in China has prompted the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) to ask retailers to immediately pull those lunchboxes from store shelves while the agency collects independent testing data.

Tests conducted by the state of New York and California's Center for Environmental Health on the soft vinyl surface of some lunchboxes show high levels of lead. State officials are concerned that children might swallow lead that has rubbed off onto their food or hands, exposing them to unacceptable levels of lead. The Washington Retail Association is supportive of the action requested by Ecology.

Lead can be used as a stabilizer in vinyl products, but studies have shown that lead in soft vinyl lunchboxes does not stay bound to the vinyl. Lead is a toxic material and lead exposure can cause serious health and developmental problems for young children. It's important to limit kids' exposure to all sources of lead

Some of the brands that have tested high are: Generation Sports, Frozen/Ingear, Roundhouse/Targus, Crayola, American Studio, Igloo, Sanford, Fast Forward, Arizona Jean Company, JC Penny, Lisa Frank, Animations/Accessory Network, Holiday Fair/Mischief Makers, Extreme Gear/Romar, SubZero/Global Advantage, Chill, Big Dogs, Childress baby bottle carriers, Innovo, East End Accessories/Worldwide Dreams.

2. That's the think about foreign-made products. They don't necessarily
have the protections (right) that we are supposed to have. Like lunch boxes and lead. What the hell do the Chinese care? If it makes the produce more marketable, the'll probably put enriched uranium in the damn things.

8. Those of us with metal lunchboxes apparently dodged a bullet
Though who knows if lead paint was used to put those pictures of Superman, Leave it to Beaver, or Barbie on our lunch containers???

It's always something!
