Here we now have the general who is the architect of the NSA program being appointed as the head of the CIA. The defense department (i.e. Rumsfeld) will have control over all intelligence agencies. This is a very worrisome development. Frankly, it also shows bush's arrogance. He is inviting debate over the NSA program. If you don't think Bush is putting into play all personnel to foster the PNAC agenda then you're awake

1. hadn't thought of that
is Rumsfeld actually a part of the chain of command?

3. No, Goss is about hookers
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Even GOP apologist extraordinaire Bill Kristol alluded to it on FAUX, before he was cut off...

Minutes ago on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said he doesn’t believe the White House spin that Porter Goss’ resignation had been planned for at least a few weeks.

I think there were either serious disputes or some internal problem at the agency or some scandal conceivably involving an associate of Goss’. Who knows? Something that popped this week and that caused this sudden event this Friday.

Watch it: http://thinkprogress.org/index.php

Do you mean Hayden???

5. Be careful when fixating on scandal..the truth is worse
I don't think it has anything to do with the Watergate incident.

7. I do. There is NO WAY that Negroponte couldn't "control" his classmate
Porter and JN have known each other for FIVE DECADES...and you want us to believe that suddenly, after all those cozy years, that Porter suddenly went off the reservation? He KNEW his reporting relationship, he knew it from the git-go.

Here's a photo of them (that's the Monkey's UNCLE sitting next to Porter) in happier days:

Here's my thought on it:

The CIA is leaking like mad. Analysts who were shitcanned are coming out swinging. The anger at that agency is becoming uncontrollable. They really want to just get rid of the entire outfit, and turn it into nothing more than a small data collection agency with no real clout.

The scandal involving Foggo and Nine Fingers and hookers, limos, poker, and whores is CONVENIENT, because they can sacrifice Porter now, and at least temporarily use as the EXCUSE that he was an ineffective manager. Turn the CIA into a bunch of jerky whiners, slime them, so they can't speak out, and even if they do, their words have no weight. The Hookergate business is a good backstory, too, though they will deny it as long as they can in order to get the "lousy CIA" theme out there.

He wasn't ineffective at all--he was FOLLOWING ORDERS. Get rid of anyone who gripes, gut the agency, because it is gonna go away eventually.

You don't have a friendship spanning almost fifty years and NOT KNOW your friend.

11. More likely a continuation of the war between the CIA
and the Pentagon over intelligence gathering ability, something I've cited before here.

The Pentagon has always wanted control over the CIA, which was wisely set up as a civilian agency. The Pentagon has always maintained its own intelligence units, useful as tits on a bull in peacetime, but ever growing. The Pentagon has simply never gotten over the "loss" of the O.S.S. at the end of WWII.

Stupid has favored the Pentagon in all of this and sent Goss in to purge the CIA of "disloyalty." There are a lot of fired agents out there, and Goss has recently sought to gag them to prevent them from writing anything critical of the little tin god in the White House.

My guess is that this shakeup is to further put control of the CIA under the military (a BAD IDEA) and to punish Goss for not being able to stop one hell of a book from coming out.

This is one step closer to fascism, this eroding of civilian power and transfer of it to the military.

13. Well, the CIA and Pentagon are doing such a swell job in Iraq...
I'm sure we can expect even more brilliant intelligence and successful Shock & Awe wherever they decide to bungle next.

Those guys should try getting a job that they're capable of performing..like cleaning toilets. Preferably while dressed in bright orange uniforms after being "renditioned" to Guantanamo.
