What is the difference between "defense" and "homeland security"?
A semantical question designed to prove what a porkish, disgusting waste of resources the DHS is.

1. The mission of military personnel IN UNIFORM is to support, protect
and defend the CONSTITUTION of the United States.

The role of DHS is to act as a spy agency for the GOP...IMHO.

2. Defense is protecting yourself. Homeland Security is one of the biggest
ripoffs in American history. It's virtually impossible to count the war profiteers, corporations and individual billionaires profiting from DHS. And guess who's paying for it all.

5. "Defense" means actually DOING SOMETHING to protect this country.

"Homeland Security" means making as many people afraid as possible while doing as little as possible to actually protect them while making as many cronies as you can Obscenely Rich.

6. Defense is karate, mace, a gun the police, barbed wire
homeland security is duct tape and plastic. About all you can do is mask off for painting.

7. "defense": fighting over there; "homeland security": fighting here
more honestly, "homeland security" would be called "defense" and "defense" would be called "offense"

Not always on the same page, are they?

Or, put another way, one's after them and one's after us.

9. No difference at all.
Both are simply ways to transfer tax dollars to right wing wallets.

It's not like the "Defense" Department actually defends the USA. The nuclear weapons that do that belong to the energy department.

11. hmmm...Wehrmacht vs. Gestapo?

- Wehrmacht("Defence force") was the name of the armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945. During World War II, the Wehrmacht consisted of the army (Heer), the navy (Kriegsmarine) and the air force (Luftwaffe), with Waffen-SS ("Armed-SS") and Sturmabteilung (SA) units occasionally added.

- The Gestapo(contraction of Geheime Staatspolizei; "secret state police") was the official secret police of Nazi Germany. Under the overall administration of the SS, it was administered by the RSHA and was considered a dual organization of the Sicherheitsdienst and also a suboffice of the Sicherheitspolizei.

oh, and The RSHA, or Reichssicherheitshauptamt (Reich Security Main Office), was a subsidiary organization of the SS created by Heinrich Himmler on September 22, 1939, through the merger of the Sicherheitsdienst (SD, or Security Agency), the Gestapo (Secret State Police) and the Kriminalpolizei (Criminal Police). The organization's stated duty was to fight all "enemies of the Reich" within and outside the borders of Nazi Germany. Included within the rubric of "enemies" were communists, freemasons, Jews, Gypsies and other "racial undesirables."

12. "Homeland Security" used to be called "Civil Defense" . . .
and involved civilians contributing to making the nation safe from whatever . . . didn't (and shouldn't) involve the military at all . . .
