My search for Rolling Stone, continued
I have been looking in SE TX for awhile as witnessed by this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=997468

Today, I went back to Kroger for the third time, went to Best Buy, HEB, and Walgreen's. All have good-sized magazine sections and there was not a copy to be seen or had, nor do I think they were ever displayed. In fact, Best Buy had multiple copies of the previous edition with Keifer Suterland on the cover, but none of the 'worst president in history' edition.
I almost feel violated; I'm angry because I honestly think TX is censoring what's available.
I'm going to give Barnes and Noble a shot, and suspect it will be there, but there's nothing I can do but shake my head and wonder what happened to my America.
I think I may also write to RS and ask them if they know what's up.
Could this even be legal?

3. Stores legally don't have to sell anything they don't want to
However, you may just have had bad luck. I've worked in the bookstore biz and the periodical biz... and different stores have different vendors. B&N, Borders, and Giant ALWAYS have stuff early. Food Lion, Best Buy, K-Mart, etc. take forever. Sometimes they are two issues behind.

Stores can choose not to sell an issue, or a magazine, but I doubt that's what's going on. THey probably have a sucky distributor like Anderson News.

16. I could accept 'bad luck', but in 4 stores? Seems a bit more
calculated than that to me.

22. Not if they ALL have the same vendor, which they probably do
And, if it's a not-so-great vendor like Anderson... they may never get the issues because of its popularity at their most important clients/ The big customers get the most -- and first -- copies of an issue first -- B&N, Borders, etc. Then the grocery stores, then the other chains, the small chains, the indie stores. Seriously, this is how it works. Buyers will call up the vendors and order more than their usual amount. Sometimes you get screwed. After Princess Diana's death, everyone wanted everything about her -- it was very difficult for us to get more than a handful of copies. THis RS got alot of advance press.

Kroger may have also gotten it in and sold out already. Email the home office and ask them.

24. OK, that sounds logical, and they're all fairly close to each
other here, so the same vendor makes sense. I'll keep looking, and a kind DUer has offered to send me a copy if he can get one!

newspaper vendors all the time... some are great, some suck, some lie!

4. Found It Monday At Houston Hobby Airport
I was returning from vacation, and luckily got a copy at the Houston Hobby Airport gift shop. This was 2 days ago, although you probably need a ticket to get onto the concourse, and you're probably not in Houston either.

5. I noticed the same at CVS
Edited on Wed May-03-06 04:45 PM by leftchick
MY RS was very late in coming in the mail, the mean time I ran to CVS who always has the RS. Zip, Nada, NOTHING! I checked again today as I happened to be in there and still Zero. I did manage to get one at Barnes and Noble who had a whole stack of them. Then mine came in the mail. I read one and will frame the other. It is a great issue. I am sure if you contact RS they will mail you one.

6. CVS near my house always carries RS...but not this issue.
Hmm. Curious. There is a Blockbuster next door. And that's where I purchased Rolling Stone and the Vanity Fair "Green Issue." How ironic...I had to go to the video store to find magazines.

10. I get the impression CVS hires a lot of fundies
there is an old fellow that yells at everyone leaving. "Have a blessed day" every time I am in there. I also suspect the lead Pharmacist is a repuke. Just my puke-dar going off whenever I see him. I suspect these people may have made an arbitrary decision. Then again I don't know who owns CVS. Perhaps a big repuke donor?

11. CVS is HORRIBLE. My wife is an APRN...she refuses to go in there
She says they're the worst in the business as far as pharmacies go. Not sure exactly what her beef is, but it has something to do with them being in bed with certain insurance companies and big pharma, to fuck the consumer.

25. Actually, she prefers Walgreens
I don't think she "likes" Walgreens...they just aren't a red company like CVS is. Personally, I can't stand any of these goddam "big box" drug stores that seem to open up on every street corner, sometimes it seems like blocks away from each other. In my town, the CVS and Walgreens literally abut each other. You can park your car at CVS and walk over the Walgreens if they don't have what you're looking for...which is pretty unlikely, because they all seem to have exactly the same inventory!

7. Tower Records (Campbell, CA) displayed it with the NEW RELEASE CDs!
When you walk in the front door of the store, you immediately walk into the new releases rack. There, at the top of the display, is the new Rolling Stone. They have a magazine rack a little deeper into the store, so putting a supply of these in the new release rack as well was an unusual move (first time I think they've done it).

The people who work in this particular store are very, very cool on a number of levels.

I got my subscription copy pretty quickly. I also got the new issue of The Nation (the cover is by the same artist who did RS and features Bush in the toilet)...

8. I subscribe and the mailing seems haphazard
Sometimes 3 weeks goes by before I get a new one (it is bi-weekly) then I get a new one the next week.

I'm still reading the "Worst President...." story. It's worth savoring slowly.

18. Call each of those stores
complain to the manager,
then call the head office of the chain, and complain to them.
Call the local newspaper and tv stations and tell them to do a story on it.
