Have you heard these GOP talking points on oil?
"Everybody is saying big oil is making these huge profits, but they're not making any more profit per gallon. It's all these dictators like Iran's president, the guy in Nigeria, Hugo Chavez, and the Saudis making all the money. Big dictator is making all the money, not big oil. Everytime Iran wants more money their president just starts talking about nuking Israel and oil goes up"

"We are trying to make as much money for all the people that have 401ks and retirement plans. If you tax oil company profits, you are making it harder for ordinary working Americans to retire."

Also in bizzaro world, I heard Rush playing snippets from reporters interviewing oil execs. Most of the questions were similar, so he starts to question if the MEDIA was colluding to make corporations look dirty instead of oil companies colluding to increase profits!!! This from the guy that faxes out talking points to the rest of the talking heads to make sure they all say the same exact thing! These people have no self awareness.

1. uh, haven't they heard...
The oil industry is recording record profits...one company (ExxonMobil?) posted a 49% increase in profits over a year ago. They're not making huge profits? BS.

"Everytime Iran wants more money their president just starts talking about nuking Israel and oil goes up"

No...everytime Bush wants more money, he starts talking about attacking Iran, and oil prices got up.

What a load of crap. :puke:

3. when confronted with the "record profits"
they just say, "of course they have record profits, they have record sales"

you just can't make some people accept reality.

2. Look at the quarterly earnings reports of Exxon-Mobil
401k plans? Where does this come into the equation?

If we levy a windfall tax on oil company profits, then that money could be used for--I dunno--helping the poor people???

5. 2 Questions,DUers..??
I emailed these to the Cspan this mornin',to ask rep.jim-bob-barton,but he wasn't asked. Maybe DUers can answer..???
"1) Last Spring, several news reports stated the US Military uses 80% of US oil consumption.."80%"! I have tried to reSearch & confirm this stat, with NO luck..I keep being directed to dept o' energy, & frankly, I need some OTHER Source. If these numbers are correct, this is obviously another reason to stop war-mongering.
2)If there's an 'oil crisis', how come we have NASCAR??? "

I wanna KNOW!!!

#2 Because rednecks like it and we have to suck up to the rednecks. Also, they say it's invaluable research for the auto industry, including research for better gas mileage.

on edit, I googled a few sites and it said in 2004 the US military used 145 million barrels and the US as a whole used 7.3 billion barrels.

7. My favorite line goes something like:
oil companies have smaller profit margins than just about any other industry.

Well, duh. That's because people don't need to purchase 10 or 20 gallons of milk a week in order to make a living...
