I see a lot people arguing about the importance of Colbert's verbal takedown of Bush the other night. Some people think it's something that most people will forget in a week or two, some say it's a major player in taking down the Bush WH. Well, you're both right.
You see, if you'll allow me to use an environmentally unfriendly analogy, bringing down bastards like these is like chopping down a tree. Have you ever brought down a tree? I mean just you and a hand axe? It's a lot of work. Even with a fairly small tree you soon get tired, get blisters, your shoulders hurt, and then you take a close look and you've barely made a dent in the thing. People keep saying that "this is the scandal that's going to bring down Bush!" Well, the simple matter is, there's no one big scandal that will do it. Taking down a tree is the sum of many little chops.
He steals Florida.
Chop!
He reneges on campaign promises.
Chop!
He runs and hides on 9-11.
Chop!
He chokes on a pretzel.
Chop!
He's in bed with Enron.
Chop!
He falls off a Segway.
Chop!
He loses bin Laden.
Chop! Chop!
He invades Iraq.
Chop! Chop! Chop!
He runs from Cindy Sheehan.
Chop!
He lets black people drown in NO.
CHOP!
He leaks a CIA agent's name.
Chop!
He jokes about no WMDs.
Chop!
He promotes creationism.
Chop!
Mission Accomplished.
Chop!
Immigration.
Chop!
Gas prices.
Chop!
He invites Steven Colbert.
Chop!
Now, these all have varying degrees of importance. And they're all part of bringing the tree down. And right now, I'm happy to be here to see that there's only a little bit to go.
That said, I couldn't care much about Bush, or the tree. If Bush, after all of this, retires to some tropical island where he drinks mohitos all day while driving around in solid gold golf carts getting fellated by super models, that's fine with me. What I want to happen is that everything that he and the Republican Party and the conservative movement stands for is what comes crashing down.
When you chop down a tree, you need to decide which way it falls. You use wedges, sort of like metal doorstops, that you jam into notches to make sure it falls the right way. Hopefully this particular tree is going to come crashing down right on their heads.
