MOSCOW - US President George W. Bush phoned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Monday to discuss the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme, the Kremlin said.

The call was made the day before a meeting on the subject in Paris to be attended by diplomats from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States) plus Germany.

“The question of our cooperation over international problems, such as Iran’s nuclear activities, was discussed,” the Kremlin said, without giving further details.

It said the initiative for the conversation came from Washington and the call was made on the eve of “multiple consultations at various levels”.
