1. The truth hurts
Unfortunately the GOP has set itself up so that none of them has a chance in hell to be pres unless they embrace the "Bob Jones" bunch. I don't think it was ONLY a slam on McCain but a slam on the entire GOP machine also.

4. I liked the "boxing a glacier" line....
...(Interviewing Jesse Jackson...) "was like boxing a glacier. Enjoy that metaphor by the way because your children will never know what it is."

And during his press secretary scene where he catches Rove doodling a heart with Karl + Stephen inside.

7. Bob Jones U

Racist, fundamentalist Christian private university in South Carolina. They have a ban on interracial dating. Bush spoke there in 2000.

8. Bob Jones University
is a far right fundamentalist Christian university. The students there are only accepted if they or their families have a long history of evangelicalism. Pretty much all coursework is tied into the Bible. These are generally christians who think they can do things to help the rapture come sooner, that anyone who isn't in their group is destined for hell, and that America is especially ordained by God to be a tyrant over the world.

17. The Titanic sank; the Hindenberg exploded in flames and crashed
I think it's more about what kind of destruction will befall the Bush Regime. The Hindenberg was pre-Nazi.

I think a lot of people since then have not-so-secretly believed that the wrecks of these two monumental human endeavors had something to do with arrogance, hubris, blindness...

The Titanic was billed as a ship that could not be sunk -- then it hit an iceberg. The Hindenberg was going to herald an era of brand new technology in transportation -- then the gas that kept it afloat burned everyone to a fiery crisp just as it arrived in the US. In both cases the loss of life was horrendous and deeply shocking to the public.

"Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" has become a term for blindly ignoring a catastrophe that is occuring *right now*. People have been snarking at Bush that his minor changes in staffing are not going to fix his problems.

Colbert, in his guise as loyal Republican, pretends that things are going so well in BushWorld that not only are they not sinking, they are flying high -- look! like the Hindenberg!

The guy is brilliant.

21. I stand corrected. I was trying to recollect photos of period dress...
... in my mind's eye, as that's often a good way to date scenes. Obviously my mind opened the wrong photo album!

18. I thought what was good about the McCain bit was the salad fork stuff
What he was doing there was critiquing the media for developing a narrative about a politician and then applying it to everything he or she does. They did this to Gore, to Kerry, to Bush, and to McCain, but pronbably to most. They tell themselves a little story, then instead of reporting the news, merely add a new chapter to that story.

19. Hindenberg?
Was during the Nazi era, in the mid thrities. I think it had a swastika on it's tail when it made it's trip to Lakehurst NJ. Part of the reason it went down in flames is that the USA would not sell helium to the Germans and they were forced to use hydrogen instead. Helium doesn't burn like hydrogen does.

22. To those who didn't get the joke:
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 09:49 PM by KyuzoGator
Just days after losing the New Hampshire primary to McCain in 2000, Bush spoke at the ultraconservative Bob Jones University and later stood on stage with a veteran who supposedly served with McCain and openly questioned McCain's service in Vietnam (sound familiar?).

That was combined with a whisper campaign that suggested that McCain had an illegitimate black child.
