Watching the History Channel on Hitler. Why so much of this now?

Are they trying to make a subtle point about the similarities of this Bush regime and the run up to Hitler's atosocities?

Also, weren't the Nazis "Christian protestants?" If they were, and they believed in the Bible, how could they carry out such evil against God's chosen people according to scripture? Then I had to ask myself, how could good Christian protestants carry out such evil against Native Americans, and Africans that bought here as slaves. There is a HUGE disconnect here that is blowing my mind as I hear people like Falwell talk about how we must kill as many of "those people" (referring to Iraqis)as we can. I think about Robertson's comments about assassinating Chavez and the US polocies of sanctions against already poor countries whose leaders oppose being pushed around by the US...sanctions that starve children, the sick and the elderly in these countries.

WTF is wrong with this picture? Or is it just me?

I agree with the rest of the disconnect, but the Nazis did not "believe in the Bible." They believed in paganism in the form of a strange religion pushed by Himmler. If they believed in anything at all. But, they did believe in Hitler, and their Bible was Mein Kampf. It would be a disservice to all the Christians with a conscience that were put to death (and six million Jews) to even remotely consider the Nazis "Christians." Now those that were engaged in slavery, those that wasted the Native Americans (although many ministers, Spanish and otherwise, opposed such treatment), that's a fit topic for discussion. But the Nazis were no more Christians than they were socialists.

Exactly who he was, who he wasn't and the true meaning of his rise to power.

A lot of factors came together to make Hitler what he was. He didn't rise out of nowhere, but he wasn't any major power figure, either, when he started.

Circumstance and personalities combined to make the horror that was the Third Reich.

16. I think if you dig deep you will find that Calvinism and Pietist

protestants are very deeply involved in Christianity at that time. Germans still called themselves Lutheran but they had been co-opted into what amounted to a generic protestantism by then. They held many similar views to the early settlers of this country and to non-confessional Christians (mostly rw) today. They are often self-centered. Anyone in their way is the evil axis.
