I'm sick and tired of hearing "homosexuality is a sin"
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 01:49 PM by Rocknrule
I just saw "The Laramie Project" and it stirred up alot of frustration within me. Is anyone else sick of people trying to tell you that Christianity begins and ends with condemning gay people? I try to be a good Christian, and I know that a very small part of the Old Testament says being gay is wrong, but that's in the Old Testament, and therefore is irrelevant to Christianity. Plus, the Bible says eating seafood is a sin too, but I'm sure that doesn't stop Republicans from eating expensive lobster dinners at GOP fundraiser events. There are commandments against killing, stealing, coveting, bearing false withess, worshipping false idols, and taking God's name in vain, all of which RW "Christians" do on a regular basis. There is no commandment "thou shalt not be gay." Most of all, it disgusts me to see people use religion to justify treating another group as sub-human.

2. The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals...
and 326 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesnt mean God doesnt love heterosexuals - He just thinks they need more supervision. heh heh heh

22. The Bible says
you must pay 20 sheckels to a man if you rape and kill his daughter or something to that effect.

What a load to base your moral principles on.

36. No it doesn't.
It's all about interpretation, which is the only way a Bible can be read, as the original authors are long since dead, so we can't ask them what they meant. I'm very reticent to accept any interpretation from a modern Southern Baptist or Pentacostal who just 40 years ago interpreted a permission slip for Segregation.

4 of those 6 are admonishments of sacrificing seed in the male prostitute at a fertility temple of Diana, Aphrodiete, Isis, etc. ...or...idolatry. Leviticus 19 & 20, Romans & I Corinthians.

One of the next two is the sin of inhospitality and rape, not consensual sex between men. Men and angels are not the same sex or beings anyhow. That's what "strange flesh" means. Genesis

The 6th I'm not sure what you're referring to, but the concept of an identity of a strictly homosexual male or female was alien to the people of the ancient Mediterranian. There was love between men, there was of course sex between men, but they were all thought of to have had wives and children. OF course this is also displayed in a heroic love story between Jonathan and David in Samuel, and another story of an intimacy between women in the story of Ruth and Naomi.:hi:

3. Its funny, isn't it?
It seems to me that the teachings of the prophets are and remain good guidelines for their followers. But dharma decays-people use small snippets of the teachings to reinforce their own prejudices.

4. If you go purely on numbers....
"Sin" per the Bible is two things:

1. Being mean to poor people, widows, orphans, etc.; and
2. Not being nice and hospitable to strangers.

Seriously. Do a frequency count in the Old Testament of the number of times a particular "sin" is mentioned. Those are the BIGGIES. Everything else, from sassing the 'rents to jerking off, is way back there in the race compared to those two. Oh, yeah, and marrying "foreign women" and sacrificing your children to "false gods."

It's purely bizarre how the fundy wackjobs fixated on the stuff that THEY'RE insecure about and decided that was what God REALLY worried about.

exasperatedly,
Bright

14. Don't forget religious hypocrisy
That was a favorite subject of Jesus' teachings and a target of his particular contempt. The Sermon on the Mount (book of Matthew) is quite clear in Christ's admonition of religious hypocrites.

5. I hate the new RW Christian Fundie spin on their anti-gay bigotry
"Oh, we don't have any problem with gay people. In fact, we welcome them, because we want to save them"

BULLSHIT!!!

They don't need to be saved.

I'd bet that many homosexuals live more "Christian" lives than the most adamant fundie...

And, besides, if they don't have a problem with gay people, why insist that they are living in sin? And why prevent their partnerships from having any legal protection?

6. The Republicans practice selective interpretation of The Bible...
They choose to believe only what doesn't impact them. Divorce would prevent them from having multiple partners, so to preserve the sanctity of marriage, they condemn the gay lifestyle and the plan the gays have for converting everyone over to homosexuality. :eyes: Right.

The Bible forbids killing, so they do it in the name of freedom and democracy, and to protect life. This also applies to abortions, but of course, it's hypocritical to fight to save the life of an unborn, yet support killing of adults. So, they ignore that one.

Lying? It's for the good of the people. It's OK. For them, not for anyone else.

Cheating? Stealing? Coveting? All OK. For them alone, not anyone else.

See? If you are selective in how you interpret these things, it can be done successfully. Just ask Rove, Bush, etc. Of course, they still have a higher power to answer to. That's when the shit will really hit the fan!

7. Gee whiz, and here I thought Christianity was about condemning
any woman who had sex and liked it and sentencing her to forced childbirth.

Christ said absolutely nothing about either homsexuality or abortion, and both were well known in his time and before (don't believe me? Revisit those David and Johanathan verses). Had he considered them sinful, he certainly wouldn't have held back. He said enough about serial polygamy through divorce, that's for sure. I doubt shyness or reticence were his problems.

The problem, as always, are the grim faced Calvinists and their very selective reading of the old testament and their abolition of the new, save for a few of Paul's more bigoted verses.

We need to take these people on, make Calvinism socially unacceptable by identification and ridicule. We can't keep letting them get away with this stuff.

13. Yeah, the Romans were sleeping with everyone and everything, and
abortion was probably the most common form of birth control during that time. Where is either mentioned in his sermon on the mount? The way these current "Christians" act, you'd think Jesus was foaming at the mouth 24x7 about both.

Not to mention the song Belle & Sebastian wrote about it.

Oh, scratch that. No parent would wish on his child a normal and benign variation of human sexuality that would make him a target of bigots and limit his civil and legal rights.

Is what most fundies practice

there are lots of theories that the so called punishments (sodom and gomorra) were really punishments for lack of hospitality towards strangers

27. I saw "The Laramie Project" here in our local theater.
It gets the point across, doesn't it? and for that reason it's very depressing.

I think the christian fixation on homosexuality has something to do with the fact that, for straight christians, it's the one sin they can very likely claim they don't commit on a regular basis. Think about it: lying, stealing, taking the lord's name in vain, covetousness, idolatry etc. etc. Christians commit these virtually every day. But gay love, gay sex? Probably not since they were teenagers! Condemning homosexuals builds these people up & makes them feel virtuous. Basic psychology. Sad, no?
